H ey, Sulley, youre number one! a yellow monster called.
Go, champ! yelled a striped monster.
Youre the best! another monster cheered.
The big blue monsters friends and neighbors were cheering for him. He and his best pal, Mike, were on their way to work at Monsters, Inc.
My pal is the best Scarer in all of Monstropolis, Mike, the one-eyed green monster, thought proudly. It was the monsters job to enter the human world so they could frighten children and gather screams.
Then they brought the screams back to Monsters, Inc. and converted them to energy. Sulley was a top Scarer.
Mike was a funny monster, though. He liked to make his friends laugh, so he worked on the Scare Floor, helping to get things ready for Sulley before each assignment. They were a great team.
While Sulley did his warm-up scare exercises, Mike brought out a door to a childs room. Then he put a scream canister in place and waited for the light to flash. As soon as the light signaled, Sulley ran through the door into the childs room.
Grrrr! Sulley growled as the door was closing.
Aaaaaah! Mike heard a kid scream.
Wow, listen to that! Mike cried. He was always amazed at how loudly kids screamed when they saw Sulley. Sometimes he wondered what it would be like to be a top Scarer.
That night, Mike talked to his girlfriend, Celia, about it.
Oh, Schmoopsie-Poo, she said, you couldnt scare a flea!
But Mike was determined to show he could be scaryjust like Sulley.
The next day, Mike carried a big black bag to work.
He waited until Sulley went to a childs room. Then he pulled a purple wig and two giant shoes with claws from the bag and put them on. Boo! he shouted when Sulley walked through the door.
Aaah! Sulley yelled. Thud! He tripped over Mikes shoes and bumped his head on the floor. What did you do that for? he asked, rubbing his head.
Did I scare you? Mike asked.
No, but you sure surprised me! Sulley replied.
Oh. Mike was disappointed, but he wasnt going to give up.
That evening, Mike left work without Sulley. The big blue monster had to walk home alone. He wondered why his pal hadnt waited for him.
When Sulley got home, the apartment was dark.
Mike, where are you? he called.
Wooooooooo! a strange voice wailed. Suddenly, Mike jumped out from behind the kitchen door. He was covered in tomato sauce. Slimy spaghetti trailed off his ears and dangled from his fingers. Im a noodle monster! he screeched loudly.
Sulley started to laugh. The more Mike tried to scare him, the more he laughed. Soon, he was laughing so hard, he couldnt stand up anymore.
Mike stared at his friend. He had been so sure the noodle monster would be frightening. But Sulley thought it was all a big joke. I guess that means you werent scared, Mike said.
Sulley was still laughing so hard that he was gasping for air. When he finally calmed down, he replied, Scared? You are one great jokester, Mike!
Mike stomped into his bedroom and closed the door.
Sulley stood outside. Come on, Mike. Open up! he called, knocking on the door.
Go away, Mike answered back. He wouldnt come out.
Later, Sulley ate dinner and watched TV by himself. He didnt understand why Mike had gotten so angry. All he knew was that he missed spending time with him.
Before he went to bed that night, Sulley decided to apologize to Mike in the morning. He wasnt sure what hed done, but he didnt want his best pal to be mad.
The next morning, when Sulley woke up, Mike had already left. So much for apologizing, Sulley thought. He walked to work by himself. Why was Mike acting so strangely? he wondered. He was usually such a happy-go-lucky monster. Maybe he was sick or had a fight with Celia.
Sulley went to the locker room to get ready. But he didnt feel much like doing his job. He was too worried about his friend.
When he opened his locker door, Mike jumped out. He was covered with blue and purple fur, just like Sulley. He was even wearing stilts to make himself tall. Grrrrr! Mike yelled loudly, waving his arms.
Sulley just stared at him. Aw, Mike, whats wrong with you? he asked. Why are you making fun of me? I thought you were my friend.
Grrrr! Mike responded. Surely, Sulley must have been scared, the one-eyed monster thought.
Sulleys feelings were really hurt. He frowned and started to walk to the Scare Floor.
Mike clumped after him on his stilts. Stop! Come back, Sulley! he yelled. Look at me! Im scary like you!
All the other monsters stopped what they were doing and began to follow Mike and Sulley. They wanted to see what Mike would do next.
What a joker! they shouted. Mike, youre the funniest! Were going to bust our guts laughing!
Im not funny, Im scary! Mike exclaimed. He took a huge breath. Watch this!
Rrrrrrr! Mike roared. He waved his arms menacingly, but the other monsters just smiled at him. Rrrrrrr! he tried again. The other monsters chuckled. How come no one looks frightened? Mike wondered. Thats the loudest, scariest sound Ive ever made.
