CHAPTER 1

Goldendoodle History: What is the Origin of the Goldendoodle?

S haggy but in an irresistible, oh-so-cute way. With small but surprisingly expressive eyes, a delightfully kissable nose and floppy ears which bob while it plays, like pennants waved by a happy childit is no surprise to us that you have chosen a Goldendoodle as your new pet.

That soft, warm, fleece-like coat, those tiny peepers just barely able to peek through that veritable curtain of fringe fur, yet able to convey volumes of emotions, that stand-out whiffer (a slang term for nose) that hones in, digs into and nuzzles almost everything it comes across with unabashed enthusiasm. This is sure to place you under a spell that will make you want to love this dog to bits.

Before getting one, it may be good to get know the history
and origins of Goldendoodle.

To help you get to know your new buddy as well as possible, this chapter teaches you about the origin (i.e., history) of the Goldendoodle dog breed. To be specific, you will learn about where Goldendoodles originally came from, as well as how and why the pioneering Goldendoodle breeders bred the Goldendoodle. You will also learn what a designer dog is, and why Golden Doodle dogs are sometimes called designer dogs.

Where Did Goldendoodles Come From?

Goldendoodles were first bred in the early to mid-1990s in North America and Australia. This was done as an attempt to create guide dogs that were suitable for people who had visual impairments and allergies, like asthma and hay fever.

Also called service or assistance dogs, guide dogs are dogs that are trained to help those who are visually impaired get around safely. For example, they can lead their humans around obstacles.

Breeds that are trained as guide dogs are chosen based on several criteria, most important of which are trainability and temperament. Nowadays, the German Shepherd, the Labrador and the Golden Retriever are the breeds that are most often chosen to be guide dogs by service animal facilities, followed by the Australian Shepherd, the Border Collie, the Collie, the Visla and the Standard Poodle.

Currently, the Labrador Retriever is the most popular breed employed as guide dogs around the world. There are various sizes of it to choose from, keeping it well-groomed is fairly easy due to its short coat, it is generally hearty, it is gentle, and it is easy to train.

How and Why Did the First Goldendoodle Breeders Breed the Goldendoodle Dog?

Among the visually impaired who also have allergies, the hybrid of (or cross between) the Golden Retriever and the Standard Poodlethe Goldendoodleis the most popular guide dog because it combines the Golden Retrievers desirable qualities with the Standard Poodles nonshedding coat along with many of the Standard Poodles other desirable qualities.

The Golden Retriever is a big dog breed. They were breed to serve as gun dogs, or dogs that were trained to retrieve waterfowl (e.g., ducks) and upland game birds that were shot down by hunting or shooting parties. Because they can retrieve game in one piece, the dogs are also called retrievers. They possess an inherent love of water, are easy to train, and have long coats that consist of a thick inner coat that provides them with sufficient warmth when it is cold and an outer coat that lies flat against their body, letting them repel water. They are well suited to both suburban and country environments. While they need a lot of regular outdoor exercise to stay healthy, they need to be kept in a fenced area because of their instinctual penchant to wander. They shed a mess of fur, particularly when the season changes, so they need regular grooming to stay looking as well as possible. They are among the popular breeds trained to become guide dogs because they are so amiable. They are so friendly and gentle, that they are among the top five of the most popular family dog breeds in the USA, as well as among the top ten of the most popular family dog breeds in the UK and Australia. They also are not picky eaters and are very playful.

Ranked as the most intelligent dog breed second to the Border Collie, the Poodle is known for being very skillful. It performs exceptionally well in many sports and activities for dogs, including obedience, agility, tracking, and herding. This is why they do very well as assistance or service dogs. The three main sizes that they have been bred are Standard, Mini and Toy. The Standard Poodle is the oldest variety and was later bred down in size into the Miniature and Toy Poodles, according to the American Kennel Club, which officially recognized the breed in 1887, along with The British Kennel Club. But the Miniature and Toy Poodles were developed within only a brief period after the Standard Poodle became recognized as the general type.

In the past, Standard Poodles were trained as hunting and working dogs. The Miniature and Toy Poodles were bred mainly for companionship, but there were some reports that they also may have been popular as truffle-hunting dogs because their paws were small and therefore less likely to cause damage to the fragile fungi when they came across it. The unusual fur shapes, proportions, and colors that some Poodles were seen sporting back then was a trend that began in the mid- to late-19th century among Victorian and Georgian women. This lead to the breed becoming recognized as the dog of the middle- and upper classes.

Like the Golden Retriever, the Standard Poodle, the largest Poodle variety, was traditionally employed as a gun dog. This Poodle variety has served as such since the early 90s in both the USA and Canada. The modern Standard Poodle still possesses most of the traits sought after by the original breeders and early owners, including: a sharp working intelligence that lets it carry out commands easily, webbed paws that make it an agile swimmer, a love of water similar to that of the Golden Retriever, athletic stamina, and a moisture-resistant coat that acts like a wool jumper, enabling the dog to stay warm, dry and comfortable in damp conditions.

In the second half of the 19 th century, Poodles were employed less and less for hunting because they were employed more in more in circuses as well as a status symbol of the rich. This is why they were seen mainly as circus and companion dogs in the 20th century. But in the past couple of decades, some American and Canadian breeders have been selecting Standard Poodles with a drive for birds to redevelop them as hunting dogs, including the American Kennel Club in 1998 and the Canadian Kennel Club in 1996.

They succeeded in the third quarter of 2014, when they redeveloped some Standard Poodles as hunting dogs that were highly intelligent, having an aptitude second only to the Border Collie; had lightning quick reflexes; very eager to please their masters; pursued their quarry relentlessly; were strong swimmers; had a keen nose; and had an excellent memory.
