FOREWORD

When you think of serial killers, probablythe first thought to come to mind is Jack the Ripper, thequintessential serial killer of London's East End in the late1800s. Also known as the Butcher of Whitechapel, among othercolorful names, this undiscovered psychopath was credited with themutilation murders of five prostitutes. As a Ripperologist andcriminologist, I have developed a keen interest in trying toanalyze and theorize these types of senseless and brutalcold-blooded criminals.

More recent and closer to home examplesinclude Ted Bundy, John Gacy, Wayne Williams, Jeffrey Dahmer, andGary Ridgway, referred to as the Green River Killer. In each casethe common elements are that the killers are male and the crimeswere sexually motivated.

Then there is the unsettling case of Geraldand Charlene Gallego, a husband-wife serial killing couple whopaved the way for other male-female killer duos to follow. Over atwenty-six month period between 1978 and 1980, the pair went on areign of terror in three states that included kidnapping, sexualassault, torture, and murder. It was the couple's "sex slave"fantasies that led to the brutal deaths of nine women, one man, andone unborn child. Even more frightening is the realization that hadit not been for a fortuitous stroke of luck, the two might befulfilling their macabre and murderous fantasies to this day, whilekeeping misled law enforcement at a safe and unsuspectingdistance.

I first became interested in this bizarrecase in early November 1980, when it was reported over the localnews that a young college couple, Craig Miller and Mary BethSowers, was missing after attending a fraternity function. Havingonly recently moved to Citrus Heights, Californiaa suburb ofSacramento where two other Gallego victims were abductedfresh fromreceiving a graduate degree in criminal justice and marrying mycollege sweetheart, I found myself piqued by the unfolding story. Before the month was out, Miller and Sowers were both found shot todeath. Arrested shortly thereafter for their kidnap and murder wasanother local couple, Gerald and Charlene Gallego.

My wife and I felt an instant connectionwith the slain couple and were appalled that this had happened in aplace where we had come to escape the problems of the big city. Itwas not lost on us that had we been in the wrong place at the wrongtime, we might well have suffered the tragic misfortune of Sowersand Miller.

Later we learned that Craig and Mary Bethwere in fact the tenth, eleventh, and final victims of theGallegos.

More than a decade after their arrest, Ifelt compelled to write the truth-is-stranger-than-fiction story ofthe Gallegos' reign of sexual assault, terror, torture, and murder. As a literary and research criminologist, I have written numerousbooks and articles that examine criminality, victimization, maleand female offenders, serial killers, crime theories, and otheraspects of criminal behavior.

This particular projectmy first true crimebook as it relates to a specific case of criminal behaviorprovedto be much more challenging, intense and, at times, emotional.Trying to uncover the truth in a crime that involved so manyvictims, investigators, states, and strange twists and turns tooksome doing.

However, I am confident that what you areabout to read is a reasonably accurate account of the events thattook place. My research includes court transcripts, medicalexaminer's reports, police information, prison records, mediacoverage, checking dates, times, places, and hours and hours oflegwork and phone work.

The fact that Mary Beth Sowers, CraigMiller, Virginia Mochel, Linda Aguilar, and all of the others whofell prey to the Gallegos, were deprived of the life they couldhave had makes it all the more tragic.

Out of respect for privacy, the names havebeen changed of some living characters whose role in the scheme ofthings is secondary or minimal to the true story.

This version of the book, first released in1995, includes an update on the killers, Gerald and CharleneGallego, information on two well-received investigative crime TVdocumentaries inspired by The Sex Slave Murders, and a brieflook at other male-female couples who have committed multiplemurders.

PROLOGUE Gerald Albert Gallego was nineteen when hisson Gerald Armond Gallego - photo 2

PROLOGUE

Gerald Albert Gallego was nineteen when hisson Gerald Armond Gallego was born on July 17, 1946. The elderGallego was serving time in California's San Quentin prison forauto theft and writing bad checks. He was paroled in February 1949,after serving three years and three months.

By April 1950, Gallego was back behind barsat San Quentin, this time for second-degree robbery. Paroled inOctober of 1953, Gallego's parole was revoked a few months later, but he managed to evade the law long enough to flee California.

He ended up in Mississippi. On May 27, 1954,Gallego was arrested in Ocean Springs, Mississippi on a charge ofdrunkenness. As the town's single peace officer, Night MarshallErnest Beaugez was opening a cell in the Pascagoula, Mississippijail when Gallego overpowered, disarmed, and kidnapped him.

Beaugez was found murdered by his own gun afew days later. Gallego was apprehended following an armed robberyin another Mississippi town. He was tried, convicted, and sentencedto death for the Beaugez murder. Gallego's execution date was setfor March 3, 1955.

On September 10, 1954, Gallego and anotherdeath row inmate, Minor Sorber, escaped from the Hinds County jailwhere they were awaiting their dates with the executioner. In theprocess, Gallego threw blinding acid disinfectant into the eyes ofthe jailer, Jack Landrum, and proceeded to severely beat him intounconsciousness. He died four days later.

Gallego and Sorber were recaptured the sameday Landrum died. On March 3, 1955, Gerald Albert Gallego, now aconvicted murderer of two lawmen, became the first person executedin Mississippi's Parchman Penitentiary's new gas chamber (itreplaced the electric chair).

Gallego apparently underwent a religiousconversion before he died and became a born again Christian. As hetook his last walk to the gas chamber, Gallego handed Sheriff LeoByrd of Pascagoula, Mississippi a letter.

It read in part:

Sheriff, if at any time you should haveyoung men in your jail, please tell them that I was once like them, and should they continue, there is no reward but hardships andgrief for their parents.
