Insert hook under both loops of the indicated stitch or through the indicated space; yarn over and pull up a loop through the stitch or space.

You will now have 2 loops on the hook.

Yarn over and pull through both loops on hook.

Single crochet made.

Yarn over, then insert hook in indicated stitch or space.

Yarn over and pull through stitch or space.

You will now have 3 loops on the hook.

Yarn over hook and pull through all 3 loops on hook.

Half double crochet made.

Yarn over, then insert hook in indicated stitch or space.

Yarn over, then pull through stitch or space.

You will now have 3 loops on the hook.

Yarn over and pull through 2 loops.

You will now have 2 loops on the hook.

Yarn over and pull through remaining 2 loops.

Double crochet made.

Yarn over 2 times, then insert hook in indicated stitch or space.

There are many variations to this technique but the basic concept is the same for each one. In this example, I will show you how to use a ch-3 join to join a small motif to the opening created by the joining of 4 large motifs.

The starting point:

Ch 1.

Remove the hook from the loop. Insert the hook in the center chain of the corresponding chain space you are joining to.

Insert hook back into the dropped loop.
