Intelligent writing, intense characters, a dark sense of humor, innovative editing, and complex plotsHomicide: Life on the Street has raised the caliber of television police drama
Homicide: Life on the Street is addictive television. Each week we watch to see who Detective Pembleton will spar with in the Box, or what conspiracy theories Detective Munch will be espousing as the truth, but more than anything we tune in to see the gritty reality that makes this show the best police drama to ever grace the small screen. There arent any car chases, rarely any shootouts, and sometimes the cases dont get solved. Instead, these detectives keep their clothes on, have a relentlessly morbid sense of humor, and catch the criminals because they have brains, not necessarily brawn. In other words, theyre real.
Homicide: Life on the Street, The Unofficial Companion by David P. Kalatthe first and only full-length guide to this Emmy Award-winning and three-time Peabody Award-winning television seriesbrilliantly captures the essence of this groundbreaking show.
Youll Learn About:
famed filmmaker Barry Levinsons decision to bring Homicide to television instead of making a film of David Simons novel Homicide: A Year on the Killing Streets
the behind-the-scenes anecdotes about cast regulars, including the onscreen clutches that led to offscreen romances
the producers many battles with the network suits over poor placement in the schedule, and the series repeated trips to the land known as hiatus
cast casualtieswhy they left or were let go
the esteemed castincluding Andre Braugher, Ned Beatty, Daniel Baldwin, and Yaphet Kotto, among othersthe characters theyve created, and their beyond-Homicide careers

Table of Contents

I want to express my deepest gratitude to those whose support and encouragement have made this book a reality: my wife Julie Stapel, my editor James Robert Parish, and my agents Sheree Bykofsky and Janet Rosen. I also wish to thank Jonathan Rosenthal at the Museum of Television and Radio, whose contributions to the research occurred at a critical moment.
Many people on Homicide , both in front of and behind the cameras, were very kind to take time out of their busy days to talk with me about their experiences. I have heard horror stories about how studios, agitated at unauthorized books like this one, have taken retribution on those who helped the authors. I hate to give in to this unnecessary paranoia, but I would also hate to compromise the relationship any of these people have with Tom Fontana and Barry Levinson. So, to be on the safe side, I will assert my journalistic privilege and decline to name my sources. I only hope these men and women recognize how important their contributions were to this project, and how grateful I am to them.
Finally, I wish to acknowledge the work of Homicide s online fans. From Sandi Lemons e-mail list to Dave Lockes wonderful collection of articles, as well as Dennis Kytasaaris exhaustive episode guide, I cannot recommend highly enough the work of these dedicated fans. I urge all serious Homicidal Maniacs to take advantage of these resources. (Please see Appendix G for Web addresses and additional online resource information.)

GET THE MUSIC BACK
As he awaits what will be his final interrogation in the investigation of Adena Watsons murder, the araber Risley Tucker waits patiently and quietly in the squads coffee room. Atop the fridge sits an old TV and a plastic Godzilla figurine. His face an emotionless mask, the araber watches a music video of the band Lush. The light and airy music reflects none of the somber mood of both Tucker and his interrogators.
During its first season, Homicide rarely used music to underscore the drama. Jeff Ronas ethereal background music (replaced by Douglas J. Cuomos rhythmic instrumentals in subsequent seasons) and Lynn F. Kowals almost thunderous title theme gave a distinctive flavor to the series, but most of the drama played out with only the dialogue of the characters to establish a rhythm.
In Episode 6: A Dog and Pony Show, Lieutenant Giardello decries how the music of his neighborhood, once a beautiful blend of ethnicities, has been supplanted with the same dull beating sound: bam, bam, BAM! In the book Homicide , journalist David Simon described how the cruel rhythms of the urban soundscape provided something of a soundtrack to the summers killing spree. But it would not be until the shows second season that the producers recognized how they could use music as a metaphor for the violent actions and emotions of the stories.
