Introduction What is TOEFL ITP? The TOEFL (Test of English as a ForeignLanguage) ITP (Institutional Testing Program) Test is a test thatmeasures students academic English skills. It tests the followingthree skills: Listening, Structure and Written Expression(grammar), and Reading. Its different from other TOEFL versionsas follows: It has no writing component as in the TOEFLPBT (Paper-Based Test). Its a paper based test, which is differentfrom the TOEFL CBT (Computer-Based Test).
It has no speaking component nor integratedskills questions, as in the TOEFL iBT (internet-Based Test). The TOEFL ITP score is limited as it isonly accepted by specific universities and institutions. The TOEFL ITP test is usually not offered atthe ETS (Educational Testing Service) certified centers. It isusually offered at the institution that is requesting thescore. Listening Section The listening section of the TOEFL ITP Test has 50 questionsand a 35 minute period with a TOEFL ITP maximum score of 68 and aminimum score of 24. It has 3 main sections.
Section A: ShortConversations, where you listen to 2 people talk for less than aminute, which will then be followed by only 1 question. Section B:Extended Conversations, where you listen to a longer talk between 2people, followed by 3 to 4 questions. Section C: Short Talks, whereyou listen to a lecture or a longer talk given by 1 person, andthen answer 3 to 4 questions. According to ETS TOEFL ITP Test, thetopics are usually academic topics about arts, humanities, lifesciences, physical sciences, social sciences, or campus life topicsabout classes, campus administration, campus activities, or evengeneral topics as in business, environment, food, language andcommunication, media, objects, personal, planning and timemanagement, purchases, recreation, transportation, orworkplace. TOEFL Tip: As is noted by most TOEFL ITP textbooks, theanswer is usually found in what is said by the second speaker,regardless of how short the second speakers sentence is. English Tip: Informal invitation phrases include: Would you like to, How about, Doyou want to, I wonder if you would like to, I was wondering if youwould like to. TOEFL Tip: Idioms are expressions that people usein their daily life. They are a group of words that when combinedtogether take on a different meaning. For example, in the previousconversation, when the woman says He is playing with fire, shedoesnt mean that the man is actually playing with fire, but ratherthat the man is going to have some troubles. When you hear an idiom(a group of words that dont seem to fit the situation) in theTOEFL listening Part A, dont choose the answer that has theoriginal meaning of one or more words.
