About the Translation

The translation of I Am Not a Number took place on a local level, through a community- based approach to language revitalization. It was important that the book be translated into Nbisiing, Irene Couchie Dupuis own Nipissing dialect of Anishnaabemwin. This was the language Irene was forbidden to speak at residential school. Nipissing First Nation community leader and language speaker Muriel Sawyer led the translation, working with language speaker Geraldine McLeod and educator and language learner Tory Fisher. Other Nbisiing speakers in the community were consulted along the way. The translation experience held extra meaning for Muriel and Geraldine, who knew Irene and have memories of speaking their language together. The hope is that translation initiatives like this will act as an innovative model to widen the world of childrens literature, creating space for Indigenous language speakers and advancing community literature.

The Indian agent marched into our house and approached my father. You knew I would come, Ernest, he said. The children are going with me to the residential school. They are wards of the government, now. They belong to us.
