A Litter of Bones by J.D. Kirk is the first book in his DCI Jack Logan Mystery series. The plot revolves around a ten-year-old case involving a child abductor and murderer named Owen Petrie. Witness accounts of him led the media to dub him as Mister Whisper. The entire case created such a frenzy that reporters made a career reporting about it. For Detective Chief Inspector Jack Logan, however, it was the beginning of his downward spiral. The trauma it caused him ruined his marriage, estranged him from his daughter, and left him obsessed with finding the body of the third victim, Dylan Muir. Little did he know that the very case he was about to solve in the Highlands would do more than just answer a few of his questions about it.

The story opens with a father-and-son duo, Duncan and Connor, walking their dog in the Leanachan Forest. When Connor disappears and the family receives a package containing a picture of Connor gagged, crying, and strapped to a chair, Logan is called to the case. He receives the order to go to the Highlands after interrogating Petrie for the nth time in a supermax psychiatric hospital. The similarities to the Mister Whisper case has the people around him doubting that he arrested the right man. Logan is sure, however, that Petrie is the suspect, and whoever abducted Connor must be a copycat.

Up in rural Scotland, he meets DS Caitlyn McQuarrie, DC Tyler Neish, PC Bell, and DC Hamza Khaledan inexperienced but otherwise efficient team of small-town police officers. Theyre supervised by DI Ben Forde, whos just as desperate as Logan to get Connor home through any means possible. As Logan tries to get his footing in this new location and piece together the picture of Connors abduction, he finds himself directing everybodys actions to a tee. The strange lifestyle of the Highlanders is an obstacle in itself, and the media isnt making it any easier to cope with the glaring possibility that the abductor might not just be a copycat. Ken Henderson, a freelance reporter for the Herald, is an especially stubborn thorn on Logans side. Ken knew before anybody else that this could be a continuation of Mister Whispers murder spree.

The race against time to find and save Connor has Logan pursuing all possible leads. Worse, his trauma from the old case drives him to search a potential suspects house without a warrant and steal a laptop for scrutiny. With his team's help, he hunts down one possible suspect after another and interrogates them until he gets the truth of their involvement out into the open. He also tracks down who couldve leaked to the media this cases similarities to the Mister Whisper case. Soon, Logan is no longer able to deny the glaring connection between the two.

They discover a house that previously belonged to Petrie, and DC Hamza nearly gets killed investigating it. He spots Connor in the attic and is just about to rescue him when the suspect stabs him from behind.

This further cements Logans belief that whoever abducted Connor must be intricately related to the old case. He instructs his team to look for Ken Henderson, but he isnt quite convinced that Henderson could commit murder. In a burst of inspiration and desperation, he has an artist make a rendering of the missing victim, Dylan Muir, but twenty years older. The result sends the entire team running in search of the face they recognize. The suspect has been in front of them all along, disguised as part of the media and using the alias Tom Fisher.

They locate Fishers hideout and discover a murdered Henderson and an unharmed Connor. The resulting car chase leads them to PC Bells home, where Fisher threatens to kill her little brother, Harris. Logan expertly frees Harris and corners Fisher on a cliff. Its there that they have their confrontation about Fishers true identity and his motives for abducting Connor.

Petrie had convinced Dylan that they are father-and-son. He subsequently used him as an accessory to the murder of the two other boys in the Mister Whisper case. Fisher abducted Connor with the belief that by casting doubt on Petries arrest, he would be able to free his father.

Logan lets his guard down and apologizes for failing to rescue him. He insists that hes not Tom Fisherhes Dylan Muir, and he came from a good family. Fisher subtly acknowledges this as the truth before letting himself fall off the cliff.

DI Ben and DCI Logan later decide not to let Dylans family know what became of him, and Logan eventually returns to the city after closing the case. The book ends with him showing Petrie the artist sketch of Dylan and a newspaper article about his death. Watching Petries subdued reaction, Logan finally receives his closure, knowing that he arrested the right man and uncovered the mystery behind Dylans disappearance.
