INTRODUCTION
IVE ALWAYS ENJOYED taking personality quizzes, from Which Celebrity Will You Marry? to Which Cupcake Flavor Are You?, and in high school I started playing around with creating them. The first ones were really just to make my friends laugh, but as I got better, I began submitting them to BuzzFeed. When I left for college, I continued sending quizzes to BuzzFeed, and I could tell they were getting popular since the site often promoted them, and then Nick Jonas actually took my Which Jonas Brother Are You? quiz on Jimmy Fallons show. And let me tell you, if youve spent your whole life in a small town in Michigan, it is a pretty wild moment to see something youve made on national television! But that was only the beginning of the weirdness. After BuzzFeeds director of quizzes was let go as part of a big company layoff, he revealed in a blog post that I had actually created many of the sites most popular quizzes. I learned a couple of other things from his post, too: not only that this hobby of mine was a creative outlet that had racked up more than 135 million views in 2018 alone and was at times the second-largest traffic driver worldwide, but that there was also a human cost of a site relying on that much freely created content, as many employees ended up being let go.
I have mixed feelings about BuzzFeed using its community to source unpaid content, but it was a great environment for me to learn and evolve in as a quiz maker. And Im excited to continue to create them and share them in this new book. The quizzes are as much for me as they are for you. I want them to be fun, and I look for inspiration in everyday life and whats tracking on social media. When I see lots of people talking about a show, movie, or celebrity, I make a quiz about it. Or if I see something when Im walking around campus or town, such as a new ice cream shop or display of chips or Pop-Tarts, I write all the different types down for a later quiz.
I never take the quizzes too seriously. They are meant to be a little crazy and silly, but if they get you thinking about what is important to you and what you really want from life, thats great, too. I hope you enjoy reading this book as much as I enjoyed writing it. If you want to know which state you belong in based on the food you choose or which kind of French fries you are, lets get started!
