1. Who was Jeffrey Dahmer?
Jeffrey Lionel Dahmer was a Milwaukee,Wisconsin, resident who was arrested for murder on July 22, 1991.The arrest occurred after Tracy Edwards, 32, an African-Americanman, escaped from Dahmers apartment with a handcuff dangling fromhis wrist and flagged down a police car. The two respondingofficers found photos of dismembered human bodies in Dahmersbedroom and body parts in his kitchen.
. When and wherewas Dahmer born?
Dahmer was born after his mothers difficultpregnancy on May 21, 1960, in West Allis, Wisconsin, a suburb ofMilwaukee. He was his parents first son.
3. Who were Dahmers parents?
His mother, of Welsh ancestry, was a teletypemachine instructor and housewife named Joyce Annette Flint Dahmer;his father and her husband, of German ancestry, was Lionel HerbertDahmer. At the time of Jeffreys birth, his father was a graduatestudent in chemistry at Marquette University.
4. What was his early childhood like?
An only child until his brother was born in1966, Dahmer was doted on. As an infant and toddler, Jeffrey hadnumerous ear and throat infections, and he underwent surgery for adouble hernia by the time he was 6. When Jeffrey was 2, the familymoved to Iowa where his father pursued a Ph.D. in chemistry. Acurious child, from a very young age Jeffrey was fascinated withanimals and their insides, especially bones. His father has saidthis interest in dead animals mighthave begun when Jeffrey was 4 and observed his father extractinganimal bones from beneath the family home in Iowa.
5. What was his mother like?
JoyceDahmer was reportedly ananxious and needy woman who required constant attention from herhusband and who tended to argue with him and others. After Jeffreyentered school, she moved into a separate bedroom and she spent a great deal of time inbed. B y the time Jeffrey was 10 she was being treated fornervousness. She had a historyof minor mental illness and had been hospitalized for anxiety. At one point she overdosed onsedatives in an attempted suicide. After Jeffrey died, hiscremation was delayed for 10 months as Joyce fought with his fatherover his brain, demanding that it be examined forabnormalities.
6. What was hisfather like?
Lionel Dahmer was reserved and intelligent.His graduate studies kept him away from home during much ofJeffreys early childhood. When Jeffrey was six, his fathercompleted his Ph.D. degree and moved the family to Summit County inNortheast Ohio, where he found a position as an analytical chemistwith the city of Akron.
7. What was Jeffrey like in elementaryschool?
Jeffrey had previously been curious andoutgoing. However, soon after he was uprooted a second time in themove to Akron, he became shy and withdrawn. His brother was bornwhen he was six, and teachers say Jeffrey felt neglected upon thebirth of his brother. Highly intelligent, he nevertheless seemed tofeel inferior to others and did little socializing with his peers.His tendency to withdraw became more evident as Joyces mentalcondition worsened and she was treated for anxiety, and as hisparents marriage deteriorated.
8. What about his interest in dead animalswhen he was young?
In spite of, or perhaps because of, theturmoil at home, Jeffreys interest in dead animals continued as hemoved toward puberty. He collected large insects such as dragonflies and butterflies and keptthem in jars in a tool shed. He also gathered up roadkilland other dead animals that he found near the familys woodedtwo-acre lot in Summit County; he brought these home, dissectedthem, examined how their parts fit together, and kept these, too,in jars. He also once skewered a deaddogs head on a stake in the woods behind his house.
9. Did hisfather encourage Jeffreys interest in dead animals?
Yes. WhenJeffrey was about ten, he asked his father what would happen tochicken bones placed in bleach. A scientist and chemist himself andpleased by his sons curiosity, Jeffreys father showed him how tobleach bones and preserve them. Dahmer used this information as hecollected roadkill and other dead animals. He later used it todispose of dead humans.
10. Was JeffreyDahmer ever sexually molested as a child?
Dahmer may have been sexually molested. Aprobation officer assigned to him after an arrest claimed hisfather said Jeffrey was sexually abused by a neighbor at age 8.Lionel and Jeffrey vehemently denied this.
11. What was Jeffrey like in high school?
At Revere High School in the Akron suburb ofRichfield, Jeffrey was a loner but a model student: intelligent,polite, and well-dressed. His grades were usually average, but hefailed the classes that didnt interest him. Although sociallywithdrawn, he took part in school activities; he played clarinet inthe school band, was on the tennis team, worked on the yearbook,and took a girl to the senior prom.
12. Did he experience homosexual feelings asan adolescent?
Yes. By his teens Jeffrey had becomeattracted to men. By age 14, hed had at least one homosexualexperience.
13. Did he experience violent fantasies as anadolescent?
Yes. His sexual feelings were entwined withthoughts of violence. For example, he fantasized about lying besidean unconscious man. At one point he plotted to attack a jogger witha baseball bat and lie beside him; the jogger failed to appear thatday, and Jeff made no more such plans as a young teen.
14. Did he experience necrophilia fantasies(about sex with the dead) as an adolescent?
