On May 10, 1940, Germanys Luftwaffe began bombing Schiphol Airport, preparing to invade the Netherlands. The Dutch army fought back, and the Nazis responded by leveling Rotterdam. Within a week, the Netherlands surrendered, Queen Wilhelmina fled to Britain, and Nazi soldiers goose-stepped past the Westerkerk and into Dam Square, where they draped huge swastikas on the Royal Palace. A five-year occupation began. The Netherlands had been neutral in World War I, and Amsterdamprogressive and modern, but a bit naivewas in for a rude awakening.

The Anne Frank House immerses you, in a very immediate way, in the struggles and pains of the war years. Walk through rooms where, for two years, eight Amsterdam Jews hid from Nazi persecution. Though they were eventually discovered, and seven of the eight died in concentration camps, their story has an uplifting twistthe diary of Anne Frank, which bolsters the human spirit, affirming that it cannot be crushed.

Hours: March 15-Sept 14 daily 9:00-21:00, Sat and July-Aug until 22:00; Sept 15-March 14 daily 9:00-19:00, Sat until 21:00; last entry 30 minutes before closing. Unlike many of Amsterdams museums, the Anne Frank House is open on most holidays, although it does close for Yom Kippur (Oct 8 in 2011, Sept 26 in 2012).

Avoiding Lines: Skip the long ticket-buying line (especially in the daytime during summer) with a Museumkaart or by reserving an entry time and buying a ticket at the main TI or online at www.annefrank.org (0.50/ticket fee). You must present a print-out of your ticket; if you dont have access to a printer, try emailing your confirmation to your hotel and asking them to print itor bring your confirmation number to the museum and explain the situation. With your ticket in hand, you can skip the line and ring the buzzer at the low-profile door marked Entrance: Reservations Only . Without an advance ticket or Museumkaart, try arriving when the museum opens (at 9:00) or after 18:00.
