Two rights and a left (simple!) can get you from St. Marks Square to the Rialto Bridge via a completely different route from the one most tourists take. Along the way, take in some lesser sights in the area west of St. Marks Square. You finish where many fish doat the market.

(See map)

Length of This Walk: Allow one hour for a leisurely walk (30 minutes with no stops).

San Mois Church: Free, Mon-Sat 9:30-12:30, Sun Mass only at 11:00, tel. 041-296-0630.

La Fenice Opera House: Typically open daily 9:30-13:30, but schedule varies depending on rehearsal and performance schedules (dry 45-minute audioguide-8, box office phone answered daily 9:00-18:00, tel. 041-2424, www.teatrolafenice.it ).

Scala Contarini del Bovolo: Likely closed for renovation but viewable for free any time from the outside. Once it reopens, its likely to cost a few euros to climb (possibly daily 10:00-18:00, closed weekends in winter).

Rialto Market: The souvenir stalls are open daily; the produce market is closed on Sunday and Monday; and the fish market is closed on Sunday. The market is lively only in the morning.

There are actually three easy routes from St. Marks Square to Rialto:

  1. Along the crowded Mercerie (a.k.a. the Marzarie; follow the tourists underneath the Clock Tower).
  2. A straight shot on Calle dei Fabbri (exit St. Marks Square next to Gran Caff Quadri).
  3. The slightly longer but more interesting route described in this chapter.

(See map)

From the square, walk to the waterfront and turn right. Youre walking on recently raised Venicein 2006, the stones were taken up and six inches of extra sand put down, to minimize flooding. Continue along the water toward the white TI pavilion.

Along the waterfront, youll see the various boats that ply Venices waters. The gondolas here are often more expensive than elsewhere. Classic wooden motorboats operating as water taxis are pricey (about 60 from here to the train station), but they are a classy splurge if you split the fare with others. Hotel shuttle boats bring guests here from distant, $700-a-night hotels.
