Overview

I Just Made the Tea is the remarkable story of how Di and Stuart Spires, an unassuming couple from the English Midlands, became Mum and Dad to generations of Formula 1 drivers, team owners, mechanics and entertainment superstars.

Dis spellbinding stories cover 30 years of the hilarious antics and tragic events of motor racing at the highest level. Whether she was following James Hunts naughty tour of Amsterdam, smuggling one racing superstar out of Spa or another in, cast adrift on a white-water raft by Gerhard Berger, covering for Nelson Piquets lack of political correctness or just supplying George Harrisons favourite cakes, she did it with a smile on her face and a teapot at the ready.

Her sorrow at the death of Elio de Angelis and the events leading up to the loss of her close friend Ayrton Senna at Imola in 1994 is as evident as her delight at introducing Michael Schumacher to his comic hero, her alarm at things that go bump in the night at Lotus, or her amusement at the antics of Johnny Herbert.

Dis sense of humour and love of people, whether global superstar or race team mechanic, shines through in this fast-moving autobiography that is packed with intimate insights into what top Formula 1 drivers are really like.

Contents

Foreword by Murray Walker OBE

Motorsport is a wonderful world of achievers drivers, team owners, race officials, sponsors, engineers, mechanics and media people, to list but a few. If you are fortunate enough to have one of Bernie Ecclestones magic passes which give you access to the paddock, you very soon come to realise how privileged you are, because it makes you part of a world where everyone is fiercely competitive but, at the same time, very friendly. Theres a warm feeling of belonging and being at the centre of it all, which is cemented by the time happily spent in the various teams motorhomes, luxuriating in their hospitality and savouring the gossip!

If you did the job I was lucky enough to do you were welcome in all of them, but the one that everyone wanted to go to most of all was the one run by Stuart and Di Spires. In Formula 1 and at the World Rally Championship that meant Benetton and Ford (and latterly at Bridgestone test sessions). You knew that youd be greeted by two of the nicest and most human people in the paddock, and that thered be a wonderful breakfast, an equally enjoyable lunch, a cup of tea, a juicy bit of information or all four! Stuart and Di are very special people, and I regard myself as honoured to be able to call them my friends, as do Michael Schumacher, Johnny Herbert, Nelson Piquet, Bernie himself and so many more.

So its good to know that Di has finally written her book. There have been plenty of books by drivers and various other Formula 1 people but, unless Im very much mistaken, none by one of those warm, friendly people from the motorhomes who keep us all going. No one knew the Formula 1 and World Rally scenes better than Di, but if she is really going to tell us everything she knows about us I hope shes got a good lawyer!

Murray Walker OBE

Foreword by Michael Schumacher

My first encounter with Di was somewhat embarrassing. I had just entered Formula 1, 20 years ago, and after a long day of driving and briefings I was hungry and searching for something to eat, so I knocked at the kitchen door of the Benetton hospitality. I was told to just ask for Mum, which I did, feeling stupid that very moment. Hey, I had never seen that woman before, so I expected a rather unpleasant reaction. Instead, what I got was a warm smile and I very quickly got used to calling Di Mum without any feeling of embarrassment. Not only because I understood that nearly everybody in the paddock called her this, but more so because she and Stuart were caring for me so much during my Benetton time that I really saw them as parents, somehow.

I like to look back to those early years, even if I am sometimes shocked about how time has passed so quickly. I remember us sitting together in the motorhome, or even once in the house where they stay in the south of France where Mum and Dad had invited Corinna and me for dinner.
