CONTENTS How to Find the Name You Want
Sagittarius and Pisces Jupiter
Id just finished watching a TV documentary on George V and his wife, Queen Mary of Teck, about how the British Royal Family had to change their name during the First World War due to public antipathy against their very-obviously-German surname, the formidable Saxe-Coburg-Gotha.

The Germans even had a type of bomber named Gotha, so this double whammy of the wretched Huns nomenclature was getting to the British publics sensitivities about all things Teutonic after all, they were the enemy. The British public suddenly became conscious that that great institution, the bastion of national devotion, pride and patriotism, the Royal Family, were actually German! So what to do about it? The obvious solution was to change their name. It just goes to show just how much the English (as opposed to the British) forget that their ancestors are likely to be Anglo-Saxons and Jutes, mostly from north German regions. The Royals bowed to the inevitable and changed their dynastic name to what sent out the most British vibration at their disposal, the most British of all castles Windsor. The Battenbergs also relented, giving up their German-sounding name (but carrying on making nice marzipan cakes) and went for a direct English translation Mountbatten. So you can change a name in a twinkling, but thicker-than-water blood always remains the same; youre stuck with it.

A part of my love of history is etymology; finding out what is in a name and where it stemmed from. It started by being really fascinated at how the place where I lived, Middlesex, got its name. It actually means the land of the Middle Saxons; as opposed to the East Saxons (Essex), or South Saxons (Sussex) you get the idea. Long before astrocartography (finding the right place for you to live according to your astro chart) became popular, I was already looking at places from the Kingston and Glastonbury zodiacs to the origins of a topographical name to see how it fit into astrology. It occurred to me that places that had evolved from watery areas fit well into the water planets, the Moon or Neptune, and the water signs, Scorpio, Cancer and Pisces. Equally, those settlements with mountains, hills and dales with outlying hamlets and farmsteads were often named after clearings in woodland neatly fitting into the earth element.

Some place names have become personal names, such as Ashley. The British Royal name change was massive. It didnt just change their ancestral history, but their current and future identity and how they were seen and perceived by the public and world at large. It created a massive transformation in their PR and proved that your name is as important as the first impressions you give when you first meet someone; how you look, behave and speak are all thrown into the mix, but before you even get to that stage it is your name that sets the precedent. It will create an impression on the person who hears it. people know which side of the tracks you come from. people know which side of the tracks you come from.

As a New Moon Aquarian it was likely before I was even born that I would be called something eccentric, unfashionable or nouveau. In 1951, in post-war Britain, Russell (with two Ls wow!), was completely off-the-wall. In my school of 300 pupils I was the ONLY one named Russell, although there were surnamed Russells. Living with the disaster that was Russell was, of course, all that was needed for me to be bullied and made fun of, and it was only when I grew older that I realised that this was a good name to have in my line of work in the public eye. To be called Russ was always a term of endearment; Russell meant something was up; I was Rusty usually to school friends, Grant to teachers, General (after General Grant) to one schoolteacher, Granty usually when involved in sport. And yet people always were more struck by my name when I became famous: Is that your REAL name, or did you make it up? people wondered.

No, I didnt; Mum and Dad gave it me, although Mum does admit that she wanted something just in case I became famous! But when I looked inside the name Russell with two Ls (it was usually spelled with one), I found it was good for a double Aquarian in the 1950s because it was different, and what are Aquarians? Different. This has become more evident with my young band of fans and followers who have recently renamed me Retro Russ, as apparently I am dead cool even wicked. I do hope so! Putting my etymological cap back on, I researched my own names. Russell is Old French, presumably Norman. My surname Grant comes from one of the most renowned Scottish Highland clans and also derived originally from the French grande grand, large, maximus in a Jupiter kind of way. Well, that was certainly me.
