Beijing Avant Garde As China races into the future, the capital city of Beijing is fast becoming a hotbed of creativity. In everything from architecture to art, fashion to film, a revolution in style is producing a modern aesthetic that is both and creative.
More Ming minimalist than Oriental opulent, designers are proving that "Made in China" is no longer synonymous with cheap, mass production. Simplicity and experimentalism are the order of the day, especially In the fields of architecture and design, where quality work is defined by balance, clarity, and restraint.
Nowhere is this more apparent than in the fields of architecture and design. And whilst Innovative residential structuresfrom Bauhaus-inspired homes in the countryside to modernist villas by the Great Wall of Chinamay be based on the most international of ideas, the roots have not been forgotten. The age-old Chinese desire to commune with the natural environmentwhether in terms of bringing the outdoors inside, creating harmony with nature, or in the local materials used for constructionremains a major source of inspiration, no matter how revolutionary the design.
The Furniture House
An experimental house
made of bamboo
The Commune by the Great Wall is a development of 11 modern villas, designed by top Asian architects, located next to the Great Wall of China near Beijing. Among these is The Furniture House, by Japanese architect Shigeru Ban, a serene, one-storey villa that comprises a main central courtyard and rooms arranged around it in a simple square format.
Ban has a reputation for using technology and materials in innovative ways. For The Furniture House, he devised a bamboo veneer lumber to create prefabricated furniture to be used as the main structural component as well as the exterior and interior walls. "This is the first time bamboo has been used as a structural element," says Antonio Ochoa-Piccardo, Chief Architect at the site.
During his research, Ban discovered that bamboo plywood, with its woven patterns on the outer layer, felt as strong as the structural veneer plywood used in Japan. He explained, "I thought, if it was possible to laminate strips of bamboo into plywood, then it would of course be possible to construct LVL (laminated veneer lumber) out of bamboo. Moreover, all exterior and interior finishes on the walls as well as the flooring could be done in bamboo to ensure consistency of materials throughout the project."
The extensive use of bamboo, coupled with the villa's glass-walled central courtyard and white marble floors, yields an elegant spatial organization that is both technologically innovative and aesthetically pleasing. It is a design with an aura of quiet confidence.
An airy terrace open to the elements leads off from the main reception area. It is furnished with a simple daybed with a woven rattan seat. Traditionally daybeds had various uses: as a sitting platform during the day and as a bed at night.
Shigeru Ban's courtyard house works to dissolve the boundaries between inside and out. The materials used-bamboo, glass, white marble-look elegantly understated when viewed from the entranceway looking into the minimal square courtyard.
