Published by Winsome X Publishing atSmashwords 2015 Table of Contents INTRODUCTION Essential Oils And Your Pet People keep pets for differentreasons: for companionship, for protection, for exercise and weightloss or for their looks or specific breed. Whatever valid reason itmay be, all pets require effective healthcare and what better, safer, cheaper and all-natural way to go about this than to useessential oils and aromatherapy. Essential oils are highly concentratedsubstances extracted from the leaves, bark, bushes, flowers, roots, fruits, shrubs or seeds of plants. They are responsible forproviding plants with their powerfully unique scents, whileenhancing their immune system and offering the necessaryprotection.

They can be extracted in different ways such as steamdistillation, carbon dioxide extraction, solvent extraction ormanual expression. Each essential oil comes with its own individualscent, healing benefits, color and chemical properties. As mentioned earlier, Essential oils aresafer, cheaper, and more effective healthcare alternative for fido.Dogs respond very well to it once it is used appropriately. It canbe used to treat numerous ailments ranging from allergies and itsaccompanying symptoms (itchy, dry, flaky skin), skin infections andconditions (wounds, bumps, eczema,), arthritis / muscular issues, respiratory and digestive issues as well as emotional andbehavioral concerns (stress, fear, anxiety). However, for aromatherapy to effectivelytackle dog health problems, certain factors must be considered.Topmost on the list is the purity of the essential oils utilized.Only the purest essential oils in the market must be used. Theessentials oils must have a "Therapeutic Grade" rating.

If you usearomatherapy grade or perfume quality oils for topical application, for example, you may be doing more harm than good because the oilsare distilled using solvents. Pure therapeutic grade oils are steamdistilled and do not contain any chemicals. The price indicates its level of purity. Puretherapeutic essential oils are usually more costly. So if you seecheaper essential oils in the market, do not buy as they may beadulterated. The oils must also be bottled in cobalt, violet oramber glass bottles.

Another important factor is dilution anddosage. Dilution has to do with the amount of essential oils thatis present in a blend while dosage is the amount of the blend thatis administered to the dog such as drops. Diluting Essential Oils For Dogs Essential oils must be dilutedaccording to the size of the dog. For small dogs that are between5-15 pounds, essential oil dilution ratio is 90%. For small-mediumdogs that are between16-30 pounds, the dilution ratio is 75%.Medium dogs, 31-50 pounds would have a 50% dilution of theessential oil. S/n Size of Dog Weight (lb) Essential OilDilution Ratio 1 small dogs 5- 15 lb 90% 2 small- medium dogs 16-30 lb 75% 3 medium dogs 31-50 lb 50% 4 large dogs 51-89lb 25% 5 extra large dogs 90lb and overundiluted The amount of dilution also depends on thetype of essential oil.

Lavender and roman chamomile oils forinstance are gentle and so may not require much dilution. Lavendercan even be used without dilution. Strong essential oils likeoregano, clove and thyme must always be diluted accordingly. The response should also be monitored.Response either positive or negative occurs immediately or severaldays later. If there is no response, try another essential oil. Ifthere is a negative response such as mild pinkness of the skin ormild watering of the eyes, let your pet rest for 24-48 hours thentry another essential oil.

This is another reason you should use 100%pure essential oils, it is safe for dogs and usually do not causeadverse effects. If using oil for the first time, introduce it tothe dog in small amounts to see if it upsets him. He shows this bypanting, drooling or whining. Start with gentle oil and then andwork up to the stronger ones. Always dilute with a pure carrier and notwater. Also, correct adverse reaction with pure carrier oil byusing to wash the affected area.

For dosage, small dogs requirefewer amounts of diluted oils while bigger dogs will need a largeramount. Essential Oils Benefits for Fido 1.
