INTRODUCTION
THE SURPRISING WORLD OF ANIMALS

Unlike any other planet we know of, our world is full of animals. There are at least a million different animal species, or types. Some of them, such as Siberian tigers or creepy-crawly cave velvet worms, are so rare or shy we hardly ever see them. Others, such as our pets, farm animals, birds, bees and garden worms, are around us all the time.

THE ANIMAL FAMILY

Humans are animals too were a part of the primate family of animals that includes chimpanzees, orangutans and monkeys. In fact, we are related to all the other animals, and all animals are related to each other.

Although most people know that humans and other animals are closely linked, we dont always realize just how much we have in common or how many behaviours we all share. From building homes and using tools to playing games and misbehaving animals do it too!

Watching out for danger

Staying safe and healthy

Reproducing, or having babies

Communicating, or talking to each other

We humans do these things, too!

As we think of ourselves as super-intelligent and advanced, we often dont realize how amazing and clever many animals are.

SEE FOR YOURSELF

Besides discovering all kinds of incredible animal abilities in this book, you can watch animals in real life, too. They could be your own pets, animals in a zoo or animals in the wild. Look out for animals in parks, gardens, city streets and at the seaside. Or if you ever go on holiday to another country, see what animals you can spot there.

TAKE CARE!

Remember always keep your distance, stay quiet, and dont bother, poke or scare animals.

They wont like it, and some animals can bite or sting when theyre annoyed!

HAVING FUN
PLAYING

Most of us like playing, whether its a board game, a computer game or a sport such as football. Just like people, many animals LOVE to play to help them relax and have fun. Youve probably seen a dog chasing a stick, or kittens play-fighting, but thats just the start

CATCH!

Dogs love catching sticks and balls thrown by their owners but what about animals in the wild? Seagulls have been seen playing catch by dropping a stick or a stone from high in the sky, then swooping down to catch it before it hits the ground. They often do it over and over again, even though it isnt useful so some scientists think that it must be just for fun!

then catches it again!

FIGHTING FOR FUN

Plenty of animals, especially young ones, spend time play-fighting. Puppies, kittens, tiger cubs, baby monkeys, bears even rats do it. You might think they do this to practise hunting and fighting for when theyre older. But scientists are yet to find evidence that play-fighting makes them better fighters or hunters. Another theory is that all that movement and interaction helps the animals to cope with stress and helps their brains to grow!

DOWN THE SLIDE!

The natural world is full of slides, just like the ones in our playgrounds. Otters, pigs and sometimes baby elephants like sliding down muddy slopes. Penguins go sliding or tobogganing on ice. In Canada and Alaska, ravens find snowy sloping roofs, slide down them, then walk back up to the top for another go!

Emperor penguins spend their whole lives in Antarctica, in the water or on the ice. They have been spotted flopping onto their bellies, then sliding over the ice using their little feet as paddles.

WATER GAMES

Jumping into water and splashing about is a lot of fun, so its no surprise that sea creatures enjoy it too. Dolphins, for example, leap in and out of the sea and chase each other. Spinner dolphins have been seen to spin up to seven times in the air. Underwater, some dolphins also blow rings of bubbles, then chase them or swim through them.

Dolphins, like these bottlenose dolphins, often blow bubbles, and play with them. Scientists dont yet know if this is something they learn to do, or if its a skill they are born with.

MAKING FRIENDS

Friendship isnt just for humans animals can have friends too, and some even have a best friend. As most animals cant talk like we can, they have other ways of showing that they want to be friendly.

FRIENDLY WOLVES

Wolves are found in the Northern Hemisphere, in Europe, Asia, North America and North Africa. They are pack animals, meaning they live in a small group. They are friends with their own pack, but not so much with strangers! To show friendship, wolves nibble and lick each others faces, snuggle up to each other and make whimpering sounds.
