INTRODUCTION
As familiar as the lullabies your Mam used to sing, from the moment Eric Spears iconic theme tune was first broadcast, Corrie was a hit. But having declared it doomed from the outset with its grim scene of terraced houses and smoking chimneys, former TV critic Ken Irwin must be eating his words in a super-sized portion. Not since the Hartford Womens Friday Club announced that electricity, though an interesting experiment, was too dangerous to be of practical use, has a prediction been so wide of the mark.
Having kept you captivated for the past half century with their tragedies and dramas, for many its Corries down-to-earth humour that is the shows ultimate appeal. But where there is light so too is there shade, as shown in brilliantly written scenes that are performed with heartbreaking poignancy: Hilda Ogden sobbing over her late husbands specs; Sally Webster breaking the news of her breast cancer to husband Kevin; Peter Barlows decline into alcoholism. These compelling storylines deal with subjects we can all identify with (give or take the activities of the occasional mass-murdering financial advisor!).
But 50 years is a long time, and recalling the details of every episode would be a challenge for even the most dedicated follower of Corrie . But what wonderful trips down memory lane or in this case the Street one would have in the attempt, which is where this book comes in. If youre a Barlow buff, a Duckworth devotee or a Rovers know-all, prepare to reminisce while testing yourself on all things Weatherfield. Maybe throw your own Rovers pub quiz? OK, so you wont get to share all the Street gossip with Norris, or half a bitter and the Gazette crossword with Ken, but for pure Corrie escapism its the next best thing. As Ena Sharples said before she dropped off thooks, Thereve been times when Elsie Tanners lifes kept mine going. Ive a lot to thank her for.
A note about the answers
While some female characters have always had the same surname on the show, others have proudly taken their husbands monikers, sometimes on more than one occasion. Characters are referred to in questions and answers with the surname in use at the time of publication or the last name used when they left the show, unless the question or answer refers to a specific time period.
