So the r e I was the other day in the veterinarians office. T o my right was a womanwho had a medium sized dog. The woman was frantic. It was as if she we r e in f r ont of a dart board desperately trying to hit the bulls-eye but only succeeding in scarring up the wall with her errant attempts. W ith each dart sent awry her dog would act with indiffe r ence:

"Sit!

Sit Down!

I told you that you have to sit!!!! Why dontyou listen?!

Four straight shots at the dart board and fourstraight misses. After a bit her dog would calm down. Then withoutnotice another dog would pass by and the tournament wouldrecommence.

"NOOO!!!!!

Stay away from that dog! I said STOPIT!!

Each reprimand was coupled with some sort ofjerk on the leash or spanking or other attempt to dole outdiscipline, all to no avail. It was at this point that I askedmyself, Why do people own dogs if this is how dogs are?

Surely this wasn't isolated behavior. I'm surethat this dog wasn't a terror at the vet's office and a dream dogat home. Ill bet when she took him on a walk he would pull herrelentlessly down the street. I wonder if in the house he engagedin marking his territory and chewing on shoes. Probably in theback yard he dug holes and barked incessantly. Everywhere she tookhim was probably a hassle. He was a recipe for stress and constantworry. Did his owner make excuses for him? Or did she blame him forbeing a rotten dog and chalk it up to him not being smart? Why didshe put up with this dog? Why hadn't she fixed the situation?

Let me ask you something. Is this your dog? Haveyou had this exact experience at the vet, or the groomers, or thepet shop? Lets say maybe not to this extreme, but does

your dog pull you down the street? Are youhaving the hardest time housebreaking him or getting him to be calmwhen you have visitors?

Ladies and Gentleman, this is normal. There areforty million United States households that have at least one dogand I would be willing to bet that nearly every last one has someissue with at least one behavior that their best friend isexhibiting. But it doesnt always have to be this way. It ispossible to live in complete harmony with your dog.

It is my opinion and personal belief that dogsare to be enjoyed. It doesnt matter if you have them to hunt, doagility contests or fly ball, engage in personal protection sports, sled, track, or just have them for their value as a companion; dogsare meant to enrich our lives and we are here to provide them withthe reciprocal quality of life.

Regardless of the task they were bred for weshould also be able to have them around the house as they amuse uswith their antics, cuddle up to us, comfort us after a tough day, play ball with us, and do all the other things that all dog ownerswant from their dog. And it is my belief that we should be able tohave all these wonderful canine attributes without all the annoyingbehavior problems. Don't you agree?

A well mannered dog is the best companion youcould ever ask for. Many will argue that their poorly mannered dogsare the best companions possible. The bottom line is, dogs aregreat. Unfortunately, too many dogs are giving their owners unduestress.

It is for this reason that I have written thisbook. I truly desire for more people to get more of what they wantfrom their dogs and less of all the bad manners that dogs can havewhen they dont know better.

So sit back and enjoy the book. I promise thetechniques discussed work. I have seen them work time and timeagain with all types of dogs. If your pal is driving you crazy, dont give up hope, together you and I can make things better. Ifhe just needs a bit of a tune-up, well, lets get to work. Let mestart by introducing myself. My name is Ty Brown and I live with mywife, our two daughters, and our two dogs, Honey and Rocco. Honeyis a mixed breed and Rocco is a Rottweiler.

I began training dogs when I was fourteen yearsold. I had spent years lobbying my mom for a dog. My parentsbelieved that they could placate me with cats and rabbits and othernon-dog creatures but it was no use. I had the bug for dogs andnothing but a dog would satisfy those cravings.

In hindsight I don't think my mom knew how deepthe desire of a dog crazy boy runs. If you have been there then youcan understand. Every trip to the library was another opportunityto pick up books about dogs. Every dog magazine was a treasure toread and re-read over and over. And every Christmas and birthdaywas just one more chance to test your luck and ask for a puppy, because that year could finally be the year.

Well, my mom finally buckled and my life waschanged as a result. I got my first dog, Heidi, who was a mixedbreed and a wonderful loving dog. Heidi was a great dog but she hadsome problems, as many dogs do. She pulled on the leash, she jumpedon people and she didn't listen well.

For me this was a great challenge. It was timeto learn how to train a dog. I read every dog training book in thelibrary at least two times. I read Woodhouse, I read Margolis, Iread Kohler. I read all the classics and more. Many of these weregreat books but I found them lacking. Most of these books did notgive real world solutions and practical training scenarios thatcould really help me. That didn't deter me and I kept at it. Iexperimented with the techniques I found in those books and Iinvented some of my own, some of which I still use to this day.

I got some decent results, but I wanted more. Iwanted to work with dogs. I was only fourteen, though, so whatcould I do. Around this time I found out about a great dog trainer, one who I still consider to be one of the top talents on the westcoast. I called him up and asked if I could work for him. He had abig heart and I think he remembered being a young man looking for abreak. So he gave me a break. He offered me the chance toapprentice with him.

I spent the next couple years working for him. Istarted out going to his group obedience classes, doing the oddjobs, and playing the gofer. In the process I was training my dogat home with the techniques I was learning. And wouldn't you knowit, those techniques worked. I quickly trained my dog to a levelthat was enviable to everyone who attended those classes. Heidibecame an obedience machine. Anything I asked her to do she wasready, willing, and happy to comply.

Not far into my training I was allowed to helptrain others. I ran parts of the obedience classes and reveled inthe chance to tell adults how to do something. For a fifteen yearold kid this was an empowering feeling. I was good at something andI could show adults how to do it too. I had never had that feelingbefore and it felt great.

It also felt great to understand dog behaviorand dog training. I felt like I was part of an elite club whosemembership had cracked the code. People everywhere were strugglingwith understanding their dogs and getting them to behave but weknew the answers. Our club knew how to get them to obey.
