As stated in the Preface to The Processes of Politics and the Rule of Law (Variorum, 2002), my interests then were already shifting westwards from Spain, a process the consequences of which are about to be published by the Gulbenkian Foundation of Lisbon with the title Portugalia Pontificia (being a survey of the surviving materials for relations of the kingdom of Portugal and the Papacy between 1198 and the end of the Great Schism). But, as the remaining items in this volume indicate, my preoccupation with Portugal (represented here by item XV) has not necessitated neglect of matters Spanish.
Again, my warm thanks are due to John Smedley for his forbearance and encouragement. I wish also to thank Dr Margarita Torres and Dr Patrick Zutshi for allowing me to reuse work originally done in collegial collaboration with them.
