William Kilbourn brings to life the rebel Canadian hero William Lyon Mackenzie: able political editor, first mayor of Toronto, and the gadfly of the House of Assembly. The Scalpel, the Sword celebrates the turbulent career of Dr. Norman Bethune, a brilliant surgeon, campaigner for socialized medicine, and communist. Elizabeth Simcoes diary, describing Canada from 1791 to 1796, is history written as it was being made, an account instilled with excitement and delight. And finally, two titles by the legendary Grey Owl tell his own astonishing story and advocate for a closeness with and respect for nature. Each of these books is an essential classic of Canadian literature.

GENERAL
INTRODUCTION
BY RONALD STAGG
For what will a public figure be remembered? For women and men who excel in one field, the answer is probably easy. For those who stand out in multiple fields, the answer is not as clear. William Morley Kilbourn (19261995), historian/author, teacher/academic administrator, civic activist/civic politician, supporter of the arts, falls into the latter category. The annual William Kilbourn Lecture, which celebrates his love for his native city, and the William Kilbourn Award, which recognizes his devotion to the arts in Toronto will keep his name in public view, but these two, and the brief biography of Kilbourn that accompanies them, give only a general sense of his accomplishments. It is his writings that provide a real sense of both his passion and his ability. None is more effective at this task than his first major work, The Firebrand: William Lyon Mackenzie and the Rebellion in Upper Canada.
William Bill Kilbourn was a child of privilege descended from an industrialist family. He attended the best schools: Upper Canada College; Trinity College at the University of Toronto, where he studied history; Oxford; and Harvard, where he earned a Ph.D. in history. Well connected in the Liberal Party, he also numbered among his friends in later life many in the cultural elite in Toronto society. In spite of all this, or perhaps in combination with all this, since his was a complex character, he remained his whole adult life a populist and a believer in government for the people. He was a passionate nationalist, more pro-Canadian than anti-anything. His home in the affluent South Rosedale area of Toronto was a centre for intellectual and artistic debate, both within his family and among the political and artistic figures who dropped by. Equally welcome, in later years, were students and reform-minded individuals of all political persuasions who embraced the same vision of society that Kilbourn held so passionately.
