Inch by inch, he moved the gun out from underneath his stomach, over to his right side. He rolled over just enough to get the gun in the clear, slowly raised the barrel aimed at the engineers heart, then changed his mind, aimed to the ceiling above the engineers shoulder, and pulled the trigger. On the afternoon of Friday 13 July 1956, seven desperate young people boarded a plane in the Peoples Republic of Hungary with the intention of hijacking it, diverting it to West Germany and claiming political asylum. One of the seven was Frank Iszak, a young journalist at the apex of the Communist terror in Hungary, whose controversial articles had landed him in a uranium mine for re-education. He broke out, but remained a fugitive within the countrys heavily guarded borders. In order to escape, he put together a boxing team, and en route to the regional championship they diverted their flight across the Iron Curtain. They had no weapons, no map, and no idea whether the plane carried enough fuel to get them there. They would have to brave the gun of the security officer on board, the wild manoeuvres of the pilot, the Russian MiG fighters in hot pursuit, and a harrowing flight over the stormy Alps without navigation. Such a feat had never before been attempted, and they all knew that failure would mean certain death.

FREEDOM FLIGHT
The purpose of this book is to bring the tragic story of nameless and faceless millions of an oppressed era to the mind of the American public that considers freedom a birthright. The story is to serve as a testimony that freedom is not free and when freedom disappears so will the society built upon its premises.
There is no place to escape.

HOW DID IT HAPPEN Where was I what did I do or not do to let it get this - photo 4
HOW DID IT HAPPEN?
Where was I, what did I do or not do to let it get this far? Who was responsible for this firestorm? Who started it? The more Id been thinkingand I had a lot of time for thatthe clearer the answer became: It was me.
ME!
It would have been easy to say, I did not see it coming, but I should have. It was my country. It was my decisionor the lack thereofto let the barbarians rise to power.
The prisons were built; first for the minds and then for the bodies. The insidious disease, Communism, was marching and I was marching along. I believed in false promises and ignored history. Tyranny does not start with the gulags and gas chambers, it ends with them.
I remained silent and hoped that this time it was going to be different. I did not yell FIRE! when I should have. Now it was too late; the fire was raging, the fire hydrants were dry, and all the firemen were dead.
DEDICATION
Youll be reading my life story with the good, the bad, the trials, the tribulations and enough gratitude owed to fill an entire book. Dedications, however mundane they may sound, are due.
First, to my parents.
They are long gone, hopefully enjoying their afterlives in the eternal kingdom of their beloved Lord, in the dreamland of the justice and fairness they sought, suffered endlessly for, and deserved throughout their lives. May their souls rest in peace.
To my teammates.
Six young Hungarians risking their lives, willingly facing torture and death without hesitation just to have a chance at the ever-elusive, priceless commodity: Freedom.
More specifically two of them: My wife (I call her Anais in the book) to whom I was married for only nine months at the time of our escape. After long deliberations, when I approached her with plans of the escape, there was no hesitation. All she asked was: When?
Then of course, George.
When the chips were down, he performed with superhuman strength and with an unstoppable determination, unlike any man I ever met. Had it not been for him, this book would never have been written. Dead men dont write books.
DEDICATION
A HALF CENTURY LATER
The list of those who made their contribution at various levels of endeavors is longer than space allows me to pay tribute to all. However there are a few who simply must have credit here:
My wife of 21 years, Serpil
Tirelessly churning out thousands of yoga classes to support Silver Age Yoga, our nonprofit pay backthe reciprocity for our freedom; thus allowing me time to research and write my book - in fact re-re-write, while make a living by chasing bad guys as a PI and working as Executive Director of the nonprofit.
Unconditional, all around support, thats her specialty.
The literary gurus: Tracy Myers and Jean Kravitz
Drove them nuts with my style, that Tracy called the Hungarian Shakespeare version of Englishshe should know: she is so so English, her bulldogs are named Elliott and Emerson. Jeans unwavering support, her blind faith in the potentials of my story was a true confidence booster, characteristically compassionate and forgiving, but when the battles movedfrom typo-hunting and punctuation to the use of wordsthey both became bloody serious. Each time I prevailed it was time to celebrate. (Chardonnay was our preferred brand. Many a glass later the book got finished.)
Alan Schueler, the computer genius
For Alan each challenging issue is a personal war between him and the computer. He did win each and every encounter with sheer determination, not to mention skill, including the formatting of my book, which was one of his more challenging assignments.
Endre Hules, award winning Hollywood filmmaker
It was pure serendipity. Filmmakers dont read books offered to them by strangers. Their agents dont either. Endre did, almost by mistake, and fell in love with the cliff-hanger. From there, he never stopped. For over three years he lived the story as much as I did.
Teresa Korniczky, a PR apprentice extraordinaire
A marketing wizard, and a great addition to the team.
TABLE OF CONTENTS
PROLOGUE
The front pages of newspapers around the globe and major magazines in the western world hailed our action as a heroic escape from tyranny to freedom. The Kremlin-controlled media behind the Iron Curtain referred to the event as Air Piracy. They would have called it hijacking, but no one had coined the word yet.
In the days following the escape, we sought political asylum in the West. The Justice Department (Bundesministerium fur Vertriebene, Fluchtlinge und Kriegsgeschadigte) of the democratically elected Federal Republic of Germany (aka: West Germany) adjudicated our case and granted our request.
