One of the finest and most accurate records of the making of the film that I have ever read. I just wished I could remember what actually went on then.
Terry Jones
If anyone can remember more about making the Life of Brian than me, its Kim Howard Johnson. He came, he saw, he got into costume. While the rest of us were fighting to upstage each other, Howard had a notebook hidden in his toga.
Michael Palin
Since Ive forgotten everything, it will be great to read what was actually going on in Tunisia. Just as long as Im the most quoted, the most vital to the shooting, and the most interesting. You dont have to mention my stunning good looks if you dont want to.
Terry Gilliam
Of all the books that I am planning to read in my dotage, there is none I am more looking forward to than Monty Pythons Tunisian Holiday. . . . Not only does Howard Johnson know more about Python than anyone outside of the IRS, he was in Tunisia for most of the filming of Life of Brian, and is the only person who captured every thoughtless remark, heated exchange, embarrassing detail, petty insult, and spiteful act of indifference.
John Cleese
Kim Howard Johnson was invented by Graham Chapman during an idle moment on the set of The Life of Brian. Lets invent a person, he said. An American fan from the Midwest, chimed in Michael Palin, who keeps a daily diary of Python filming. And then doesnt publish it for years and years. How we laughed, and each day wed make up stuff this person would write about us.
Eric Idle
In 1978, Kim Howard Johnson ran away to join the circus-Monty Pythons Flying Circus, that is. The Pythons converged on Tunisia to film their timeless classic, Life of Brian, and Howard found himself in the thick of it, doubling for nearly all the Pythons, playing more roles in the film than John Cleese, and managing to ruin only one shot. He became the unit journalist, substitute still photographer, Roman soldier, peasant, Biggus Dickuss double, near-stalker, and, ultimately, friend and confidant of the comedy legends. He also kept a detailed journal of what he saw and heard, on set and off, throughout those six weeks.
The result is a unique eyewitness account that reveals the Pythons at work and at play in a way that nothing else written about them could do. Now, for the first time ever, the inside story of the making of the film is revealed through the fly-on-the-castle-wall perspective. Even the most diehard fans will get a fresh take on the comedy greats through some never-before-revealed nuggets of Python brilliance: what John Cleese offered to exchange for suntan lotion; Terry Jones directing in drag; Michael Palins secret to playing revolutionaries and peasants; Graham Chapman gets naked; Terry Gilliam gets filthy; Eric Idle haggles; the secret of the Thespo-Squat; Mrs. Pilate; talk of George Harrison; the cake-flinging that jeopardized the production; badminton, impromptu cricket, and erotic frescoes; and the first-ever presentation of Always Look on the Bright Side of Life.
Here, uncensored, are the legendary Pythons in their prime. It was a period of comedy history that will never be duplicated, and Monty Pythons Tunisian Holiday captures the wit, the genius, and the sheer silliness of the six men that comprised Python.

(coauthor with Charna Halpern and Del Close)

I KEPT UP AS WELL AS I was able, considering I was near Chicago and the Pythons and crew were all an ocean away. I sent off a few letters after I returned, which I knew they would receive after they all returned to England. The first to reply was John Cleese, in a letter dated November 24:

Very nice to get your letter. So pleased you enjoyed your stay. Things got a good deal less enjoyable towards the end, as the weather and hotels deteriorated rapidly when we went south, but I think we have done alright despite this. We saw a rough assembly on Monday and were pretty pleased. A lot of work to be done of course, particularly on the end, but a good proportion of it works very well indeed.

I kept in touch with the progress of the film largely through letters as it entered the postproduction stages. I began the major task of sorting through everything that I had gathered in Tunisia, and I compiled another volume of my Python fanzine. I received another letter from John dated December 18, which meant quite a bit to me as I knew he was awfully busy trying to finish the next six Fawlty Towers .

I heard from Mike PalinI was not therethat the first public showing got a good response, although there is some very heavy cutting to do around the raid on Pilates palace. You had better not publish this yet as Terry Jones may not know that this is how everyone feels!

Eric came over to host Saturday Night Live in December; it was nice to see a mention of Tunisia in his opening monologue for the show. It was also a bit strange to see him on televisionit was the first time I had seen any of them since I left Tunisia. He looked exactly the same.
I rang up Michael in New York on the twenty-fourth of January and caught him in a less busy moment. Rather than chopping the film into two segments, or inserting an intermission, both of which had been discussed, the film was being edited down to about ninety minutes, he explained. Much of the raid on the palace would go, as well as part of the haggling scene and some of the chase through the marketplace, as well as, probably, the ex-leper scene. I told him I was sorry to see them go, but he explained that much of it was repetitious and overly long, and the other scenes were good but not really essential to the story. He noted that the ex-leper scene might be more trouble than it was worth to keep in the film.
Just after I spoke with Michael, a letter arrived from Clive, back in England and determined to break into the film business. He had made it toGabes and Carthage and noted that, among other bits of shooting, he did a wild track for Garth of armor clanking. It was, he noted proudly, the very last location recording for Life of Brian.
It took time to edit the film down to an hour and a half. Although the ex-leper and most of the haggling remained, the kidnapping of Pilates wife and the King Otto scene were cut (they can still be seen on the Life of Brian Immaculate Edition DVD, along with another deleted scene of shepherds watching their flocks near Bethlehem). While some of the cuts were painful, the Pythons all agreed that the changes ultimately improved the film.
Late the following summer, I went to New York when the Pythons came over for the U.S. opening of Life of Brian. The movie had actually begun screening the previous month at a couple of theaters, but the group didnt promote it until its wider American release. Although there were no formal events, I got to see and visit with most of the Pythons, John Goldstone, and even George Harrison.
The opening week was accompanied by protests from religious groups who, for the most part, either hadnt seen the film, had completely misunderstood it, or chose to exploit it for their own purposes. I had gotten wind of a protest demonstration and decided to attend incognito, in order to give the Pythons a report of the proceedings. I even got a copy of the address given to the crowd, which underscored how badly they had misunderstood the film and its message.
Although there were scattered bans and boycotts in America and Europe, Life of Brian was well received by critics and fans alike and did fine at the box office, which ensured the Pythons backing for another movie. Still, their follow-up, Monty Pythons Meaning of Life, was not released until 1983. In the meantime, they revived and revised their stage show in the fall of 1980 for Monty Python Live at the Hollywood Bowl. I drove out to L.A. in a rusted-out ten-year-old Chevy Impala for the event, met up with the Pythons once again, and even ended up joining the show, making a brief appearance as a Pantomime Goose each of the four nights.
Through the years, the Pythons had gone from idols to good friends. I was living in Chicago throughout the 1980s and 1990s, and Graham Chapman was a frequent visitor as he traveled the United States with his lecture tours (which actually began one memorable night in Chicago). I saw the the five surviving members onstage at the Aspen Comedy Festival and at the Broadway opening of Spamalot brought a lump to my throat. In turn, I have done my best to chronicle the projects of them all, both individually and as Monty Python.
In New York in September 1979 for the opening of Life of Brian, I observed the protest rally targeting the film.
The protestors marched from the Warner Communications building to the theater showing Life of Brian. The protesters are forgotten, Brian endures as a classic.

others on their occasional trips through Chicago, and I made frequent journeys to London to visit as well. The most poignant was undoubtedly in December of 1989, when I went to Graham Chapmans memorial service; his death of cancer on October 4, 1989, devastated all who knew him. There were a few tears, but there was much more laughter, as Graham would have wanted it.
I went on to write several best-selling books, including The First 200 Years of Monty Python, And Now For Something Completely Trivial, Life (Before and) After Python, and The First 280 Years of Monty Python. Ive attended the Python anniversary celebrations, and they are kind enough to make sure I am always included when there is an event of Python significance. There may not be any more Python films or TV shows, but seeing
