To Tell or Not to Tell

Kelly slammed her locker door shut. Did you hear about Paul and Megan?

I shook my head. Huh-uh. I mean, I think theyre still together and everything...did something happen?

Kelly gave me that wicked grin. Um, yeah.

Well, what? I was pretty curious. Paul was easily the most popular guy at CHS. All of us had secretly had a crush on him for, like, two years, but since he was a senior, we never got our hopes up. So it was kind of a shock when he started dating our friend Megan a couple of months ago. Some people had given her a hard time about itI think just because they were jealous. I mean, so what if hes three years older? Its really cool that he sees what a great person she is.

Kelly leaned closer so she could whisper in my ear. Jami said Megan never came home last night! She went to Pauls place after dinner to rent a movie, and she didnt get back in till 6:00 this morning. Jami said Megan begged her not to say anything to their parents. Jami told her shed think about it.

My eyes widened. Jami was a year older than us. She and Megan basically had a good relationship, but ever since Megan started seeing Paul, Jami wasnt too happy about it. I looked at Kelly. Do you think theyyou know..?

Kelly shrugged and grinned again, nodding over her shoulder.

I looked that direction and saw Megan standing with a group of older girls. They were giggling and seemed to be excited, but the hall was too noisy for me to catch what they were saying. Just then, Paul strode out of his second period class, went over to Megan, put his arm around her and kissed her on the cheek.

Well, what do you think? Kelly answered, looking back at me as she headed to phys ed.

Um, I dont know... I said. Ill see you later. Sometimes Kelly made me feel uncomfortable. I mean, you shouldnt say something about somebody else if you dont know its true. Well, she hadnt really said Megan and Paul had slept together, but

Yo, April! Paul and Megan smiled at me and waved as they walked by on their way to class. As she passed me, Megan gave me that I-have-something-to-tell-you look. I got a weird feeling in my stomach.

When I sat down at my chem lab table, Jordanmy lab partner whos another friend of ourswas waiting on me. Hey, April! I have a question for you... I was afraid I knew what it was. Instead, Jordan said, I think Im gonna nominate Megan for Miss CHS. You know Paulll be Mr. CHS this year, and I bet we could get everybody to vote for Megan too. What do you think?

Well... I hesitated.

Jordan looked at me funny. Is something wrong? I mean, I know you like Paul and everything, but I thought youd want to support Megan...youre the one who always said she was such a great person, always helping others... , I took a breath, wondering what I should say.
