TATE BRITAIN TOUR

The National Gallery of British Art (a.k.a. the Tate Britain) features the worlds best collection of British artsweeping you from 1500 until today. This is peoples art, with realistic paintings rooted in the people, landscape, and stories of the British Isles. Its walls contain Hogarths stage sets, Gainsboroughs ladies, Blakes angels, Constables clouds, Turners tempests, the swooning realism of the Pre-Raphaelites, and the camera-eye portraits of Hockney and Freud. Even if these names are new to you, dont worry. Youll likely see a few famous works you didnt know were British and exit the Tate Britain with at least one new favorite artist.

Renovation in 2012: While renovation work on the main entrance, rotunda, and several galleries is underway, much of the permanent collection has been stored. Fortunately, a few paintings are on display in a single room, labeled Key Works from the Historic Collection. Find it about halfway down the main hallway, on the left.

(See map)

Cost: Free (3 donation requested), but optional temporary exhibits require separate admission.

Hours: Daily 10:00-18:00, first Fri of each month until 22:00, last entry to special exhibitions at 17:15 (or 21:00 when open late).

Getting There: Its on the Thames River, south of Big Ben and north of Vauxhall Bridge. The museum has two entrances: the main entrance on Millbank, facing the Thames, and the newer Manton entrance on Atterbury Street (wheelchair-accessible).

You can reach the museum by Tube, ferry, bus, or on foot:

By Tube: Take the Tube to Pimlico, then walk seven minutes.

By Ferry: Hop on Thames Clippers Tate to Tate ferry from the Tate Modern (5.50 one-way, 12.60 day ticket, 33 percent discount with a Travelcard, buy ticket on board, departs every 40 minutes from 10:00 to 17:00, 18 minutes, www.tate.org.uk/tatetotate ).

By Bus: Take bus #87 (leaves from National Gallery, drops off in front of museum) or bus #88 (leaves from Oxford Circus, drops off behind museum).
