Prologue
Mikes been involved in a shooting and paramedics are performing aggressive CPR.
When Pam heard those words, the world stopped revolving. The sun froze in the sky. All the usual office noises like phones ringing and the clatter of fingers on keyboards came to a screeching halt as Pams mind tried to grasp the enormity of that message.
Mikes been shot? she thought.
The first thing the human brain does is automatically reject what it cannot fathom. Thats impossible. Mike cant be hurt. Mike isnt hurt. Pams hand shook as she grasped the phone.
Pam, Mikes wife, Dawn, said breathlessly. My brother just called me. Hes a police officer. He just got a call from one of his cop buddies who heard it on the police scanner that Mikes been involved in a shooting and paramedics are performing aggressive CPR.
Much as Pam never wanted to hear those words in her entire life, here they wereblaring in her ear. She often socialized with her longtime bounty hunter, Mike, and his wife, but his wife rarely called at work. Dawn is a calm, cool, collected woman who has her feet planted firmly on the ground. Shes not one for hysterics or exaggeration. Pam knew immediately what she was saying was true. Mike might have been shot and might possibly be gravely wounded or dying. Pam felt like shed been kicked in the stomach.
Finally Pam found her voice: Mikes hurt?
The information is just coming in. All we know for sure is that Mikes involved. I tried to call Mike on his cell phone, but he didnt answer.
Dawn, I know hes been chasing Roberto. Ill make a few calls, see what I can find out and if I hear anything, Ill call you back. If you hear something before I do, please call me.
Pam called Mike on his cell phone. No answer. Then she called Mikes partner, Byron, who didnt answer either. In all the years shed known them, theyd always answered their cell phonesday and night. Something was wrong. Very wrong.
Earlier that afternoon, Mike and Pam had been in the middle of discussing one of Pams forfeitures when Mike received a call on his cell phone. Pam had heard the urgency in his voice.
I gotta go. He grabbed his jacket from the back of the chair. Gary and Savant heard from a reliable informant that Roberto has his car at a local garage for repairs. Theyve been staking out the place twenty-four/seven waiting for Roberto to pick up his car. The car just left the garage. Gary just called me. He and Savant are following him. Byron and I have to intercept.
Pam nodded.
Roberto is a really bad guy, Mike had told Pam a few days earlier. He shot up a couple of his customers houses in a drive-by. He jumped bail on Garys bonding company to the tune of $150,000. He had a missile in his living room. Gary and his bounty hunter, Savant, arrested Roberto once before and turned him over to the police who, after they learned about the missile, turned him over to the FBI. Roberto agreed to snitch on who gave him drugs and the missile and to give information on organized crime in exchange for his freedom, so they let him go. Since he hadnt been jailed, he wasnt produced in court and Von Wahlde, a prosecutor who gives bonding companies such a hard time, refused to let Gary off the hook. We view Von Wahlde as a by the book kind of guy. There are no shades of gray with him. He sees only black and white. According to him, the bondsman has to produce the defendant in court or book him into jail to get off the bond. Since Roberto wasnt produced, Von Wahlde gave Gary a choice: either pay the $150K or go get him again.
Gary thinks thats bullshit. So do I! I feel its messed up that the prosecutor wont let him off the bond. They did their job. They arrested him. It wasnt their fault the police let him go. Robertos back on the street and hes running hard. Since hes armed and dangerous, Gary asked me to assist him and Savant in rearresting Roberto. Because PHREE is slow right now and all our forfeitures look okay, I agreed to help. Byron and I have been nosing around and learned Roberto is moving around from one place to another, never staying in one place. Finding him wont be easy. According to Robertos wife, hes heavily armed. She told Byron, Roberto will shoot you. Hell die before he goes back to jail and hell take the bounty hunters who are chasing him down with him.
