MOONSTRUCK...
"Relax," John whispered, then brushed Emma's hair from her forehead. A slight wind through the open tent flap blew the strands back against her cheek. When his fingertips touched her flesh, she shivered and gasped. He smiled and lowered his head.
"Please, don't" she pleaded and put her palms against his chest, holding him away.
He frowned, hesitating. "Why not?"
"My grandfather. Heweyou" she sighed. "I can't. You're a laborer. I'm a performer."
"True."
"We're not the same."
"No, we're not. I'm a man; you're a woman. That's the idea, Emma."
"I don't know you. You're not one of us."
"Doesn't that make me all the more exciting?"
"Yes." The word escaped her on a whisper. Her eyes widened at the admission.
John nodded, slowly. "You want to kiss me, Emma. You've wanted to kiss me from the first moment you saw me. Just like I've wanted to kiss you. It's time you grew up, Emmaline. Make your own decisions about the people you choose for friends. Think for yourself." He pulled her closer, and her eyes drifted closed as she lifted her mouth upward, unable to keep herself from wanting what she could not have. "Trust me," he whispered, just before his lips touched hers.
She stiffened. Her eyes opened, and fury snapped in their green depths. She shoved against his chest, catching him off guard so he stumbled back a few steps. She slid out of his reach, but she did not run. "Trust you?" she hissed. "I trust no one any longer. I don't plan to be the next victim, Johnny.... "

Chapter One
Southern Wisconsin, 1870
"Evil stalks us." Franz Gerhardt stepped into the middle of the platform. The crowd, composed of Gerhardt Circus performers, turned their attention to their leader.
Emmaline Monroe, accustomed to the melodrama inherent in her grandfather, did not react as the rest of the crowd did to his words, with gasps of fear and mumbles of apprehension. Instead, she watched and listened and kept her disbelief to herself.
At a gesture from the old man, the crowd fell silent. He continued, "The evil one murders the innocent beneath the full moon."
The people shifted and shuffled with unease, glancing up at the sky, then away. As one, they nodded. They had seen the two bodies, torn apart as if by a wild animal. Most of the assembled were immigrants from Germany, well versed in the terror of the full moon. They knew the signs. They believed.
Emma, a daughter of the New World, not the Old, did not. She, more than any of them, knew that wild

animals were unpredictable at best. The two men had been victims of a renegade wolf or a rabid coyote, nothing more.
"The secret of these deaths must remain within the bounds of these wagons," Franz went on. "If outsiders learn of the danger, no one will come to our performances, and the law will not allow us to travel. This will mean the end of our world. We do not need anyone to tell us what we must do. We know the legends; we know what walks in our midst. Once we discover the
