PASSION'S SURRENDER
Maria looked up at Shadow again, questioning him with her eyes. Why, oh, why couldn't she fight him? She should show some sort of protest, yet she could not. A side of her that she had never known before would not allow her to deny him....
Her pulse raced as his face drew closer, her eyes became wild, her knees weak. She did not truly want to feel this need that ate away at her heart. Never in her life had she been rendered so helpless.
A sensual tremor coursed through Maria at the first contact of his mouth on her lips. A throaty moan frightened her when it rose from deep inside her. The pleasure of his kiss was so profound and the touch of his hands, now cupping her breasts through the soft buckskin blouse, was so beautifully sweet. Never in her wildest dreams had she thought any man could steal away her ability to think.
But it was happening....

The Navaho call themselves Dineh, the People. "Navaho" was the name given to them by the Spaniards.
The Navaho's primary concern was, and still is, to keep themselves harmonious with God and all his creations.

Chapter 1
Voices came louder through the door as Maria Zamora stood listening close behind it. She had watched the arrival of the Navaho Indian chief, Shadow, and having been entranced by him since the first time she had seen him many years ago when she was ten, could not help but stay to listen to his deep, fine voice, though she longed to see him face to face instead of from a distance, as was usually the case.
Now a ravishing beauty at eighteen, Maria was forbidden by her father to be within viewing range of the Indian leader whenever the two men transacted business. Usually the meetings were held away from their plantation.
But today, since Governor Castillo was also present for this meeting between two powerful landowners, it seemed only appropriate to gather in the comfort of Esteban Zamora's mansion. Maria's father had ordered her to stay in the sewing room at the back of the house.
But Maria couldn't! Never had she been this close to Shadow! And because this might be her last opportunity she had disobeyed her father.
When the voices grew more and more bitter in the study, Maria became uneasy. She swept her long and flowing, bright calico skirt around and moved farther into the parlor adjoining the study where the argument was taking place. Through the plaster wall she could still hear the determined

voices, first her father, then Shadow, and then Governor Castillo.
Accusations were being tossed about from man to man and she understood them all, having heard them discussed so often at the dinner table between her fatherthe wealthy owner of a plantacin and a grand cortijo, or manor houseand those who would come to discuss the matters of the Indians with him.
She turned and stared at the closed door when her father's voice became dominant in the study. When she heard him offer a bribe to Shadow, a bribe that could eventually force Shadow to relinquish his land and sheep, Maria cringed and tried to focus her thoughts elsewhere; she knew without a doubt what the reaction of the handsome Indian would be. He was a man who had not yet been corrupted by bribes. She knew not to expect him to be fooled into accepting this time!
