"James, it's all right," she said, taking his hand in hers and pressing it to her cheek.
"Is it truly?" he asked, caressing her face.
"Yes," she said, kissing the tips of his fingers. When his hand left her lips and found the buttons at the front of her dress, she took a deep breath. Then she relaxed and let the shame that was trying to surface again be suffocated by the warm, sure hand that now covered one breast.

But the question came from the rational part of her and was sublimely irrelevant as he lowered her, clinging, to the ground, and made her forget the dampness of the night. His breath coming in sharp rasps silenced all else in her ears as he bent his head and touched her lips with his.
Lenora began to writhe with pleasure, losing all thought of what was soon to happen. All she knew was this new existence, outside of time and reason, and this new urgency demanding to be quelled....

Behind him were days and days of countless graves. James Calloway gave the reins another slap, chewing angrily on a piece of grass. He had not realized what a large part death played in the pioneer experience. "Damn cholera," he whispered. "Damn, damn cholera."
Since having separated himself from the wagon train, he had only to follow a trail of discarded furniture, broken down wagons, and fresh graves to know that he was headed in the right direction: to San Francisco, California, where his dreams were now leading him.

Cholera had been the evil lurking on this trail for weeks now. And when her father had first shown signs of it, all other members of the
