In the title novella of this collection, Hogan uses his storytelling powers and keen eye for character to recreate the life and times of frontiersman Clay Allison. Despite his rowdy reputation, Allison is portrayed as a man of integrity, willing to put his life on the line for what he believes in.

The attorney half turned, reaching for a gun hanging on the wall. Clay Allison's hand moved swiftly. His Bowie knife glittered, slicing through the air. It struck with a dull thud, pinning Mills's coat sleeve to the wooden paneling. Angrily Mills jerked loose. He spun to face Allison.
"You'll regret this," he said in a low voice. "It's a good thing I'm not armed."
"You won't have to go far to get a gun," Clay replied coolly. "I'll wait right here for you."
The door slammed. Dr. Longwell, his face flushed from running, entered, accompanied by Lee. He pulled up in the center of the office, glancing about.
"What's going on here?" he demanded.
Melvin Mills did not turn to him. "If you have a pistol on you, Doctor, I'd like to borrow it."
Longwell gasped in astonishment. "Are you crazy, Melvin? You want to try to outdraw Clay Allison?"
Mills nodded. "I mean to kill him."
Longwell wagged his head in disbelief. "You've got less sense than I gave you credit for. Allison would shoot you full of holes before you could even touch your weapon."

Foreword
In this Western I have combined my short novel about Robert Clay Allison with four short stories that I wrote some years ago at the behest of my German publisher. Of course, these stories at the time were translated prior to their publication in Germany but are included here for their first publication in the English language as I originally wrote them.
Many tales involving the feats and escapades of Clay Allison, outlaw, circulate around the southwest area where he lived and died. Conversely there are those who have knowledge of the New Mexico Cimarron country who maintain that he was no outlaw but one notch short of being an acclaimed and highly respected man. It is difficult to determine the truth, but, as the old saying goes, there is both good and bad in every man, only on occasions do circumstances compel one to overshadow the other, and it befalls subsequent generations to determine in their minds which was the most acceptable.
That Clay Allison was a man's man and many a woman's ideal is not to be denied. Much of this impression may have arisen from the multitude of yarns extolling his prowess, yet of a great number of these tales Allison himself had no knowledge. There are seven versions of the manner in which Clay Allison met a violent death. Similarly, all other events in the life of this turbulent Tennessean have through the decades become distorted, until anyone seeking the truth is confronted by a maze of legends, contradictions, and exaggerated half-truths.
Allison, unfortunately, had no biographer at his elbow during his hectic lifetime, as did some of the fabulous men of that day. No one bothered to note on paper the events, the

explosive incidents that made up his life. We have only a few, perhaps prejudiced, newspaper accounts, the cold meager entries in court records, and many word-of-mouth reports from which to draw a picture. Thus, Clay Allison's story has been a matter of sifting through a multitude of second- and third-hand tales, a horde of legends, and dearth of facts. Version was matched against version, with date, time, and pure coincidence often being the yardstick for verification. From those comparisons came what appeared to be the true story.
