THEFLYINGHERITAGECOLLECTION
WhenAmericanairpowerhadtakenoverEuropeanskies,manyUSwarplanesleftthefactorywithoutcamouflage.Thebaremetalairplaneswerefasterandlighter,andtheycouldbeacceptedbythearmyafewdayssooner.BoththeFHCsP-51andP-47flywithoutcamouflage.
ThePugetSoundregionisoneofthehotbedsofAmericanaviation.In1916,William
BoeingflewhisfirstairplanefromthewatersofLakeUnionneardowntownSeattle.
DuringWorldWarII,thousandsofB-17andB-29heavybomberswerebuiltinSeattle
andRenton,andtheeraofthejumbojetbeganwhenthefirstBoeing747tooktotheskies fromPaineFieldnearEverett,Washington,in1969.
BoeingsfactoryatPaineFieldisthelargestbuildingintheworldbyvolume:New
airlinersemergefromthisfacilityeachday,wingingawaytoallpartsoftheglobe.The FlyingHeritageCollection(FHC)movedtoPaineFieldfromasmallgroupofhangarsin Arlington,Washington,inJune2008.
TheFHCisunique.EstablishedbyphilanthropistandMicrosoftCorporationco
founderPaulG.Allen,itprovidesthevehicleforAllentosharehisprivatecollectionof rareaircraftandartifactswiththepublic.TheFHCisoperatedbyFriendsofFlying
Heritage,a501(c)(3)non-profitorganization.
Thecollectionfocusesontechnicalthemesfromaneraofamazinglyrapidchange.The
conceptofchangesintechnologyasseenthroughtheaircraft,artifacts,andtheir
surroundingexhibitswasanaturalfitforAllen,apioneerinthefieldsofcomputer
softwaresystemsandindustrialscience.
Allenwasalsoinfluencedbytheexperiencesofhisfather,whojoinedtheUSArmy
andservedinEuropeduringWorldWarII.KennethAllenlandedatNormandyinJune
1944andmovedthroughFrance,Belgium,andGermanyduringthelastyearofthat
conflict.Undoubtedly,thestorieshetoldyoungPauluponhisreturnplantedtheseedof interestinWorldWarIIhistory.
TheFHCoperatesfromapairofhangarsonthesouthendofPaineFieldsnearlytwo
mile-longmainrunway.TheprimaryhangarwasconstructedafterWorldWarIIforthe
repairandmaintenanceofAlaskaAirlinespassengerplanes.However,duetotheKorean WarandColdWarneeds,thebighangarwasquicklyturnedovertotheUSAirForce.
Today,itservesasanexcellentplacetodisplayandmaintaintheaircraftinthecollection.
TwoaspectssettheFHCapartfromotheraviationmuseumsandflyingcollections.
First,theaircraftarerestoredimmaculately.Eachairplanelooksasitdidwhenitrolled outofthefactoryorwhenitwasservingwithanoperationalsquadronduringthewar.The FHCstaffisdedicatedtorestoringandmaintainingtheaircraftasaccuratelyaspossible.
Anexampleofthiscanbeseeninthemechanicsshopwheredrawersofhardwarelinethe walls.Evenforsomethingassimpleasacommonbolt,therearedifferentfastenersfor eachnationsaircraftfromtheSpitfire(BritishImperial),totheMustang(US
governmentAN),totheBf109(Germanmetric).
AnaircraftliketheB-25JgivesanotherdemonstrationoftheFHCsdedicationto
accuracy.WhilemanyflyingMitchellsarebareontheinterior,sopatronscanbesold rides,theFHCaircraftcontainsafullcomplementofwartimeequipment.Hauling
thousandsofpoundsofweaponry,survivalequipment,andcommunicationsgearmay
slowtheplaneandburnadditionalfuel,butitmoreaccuratelydemonstratesthecharacter andcapabilitiesofthiswartimemediumbomber.
TheFHCoftenhostsvisitingvintageaircraftduringthepeakmonths.Here,thecollectionsP-51MustangandCommemorativeAirForceBoeingB-17GSentimentalJourneysharetherampatthestartofadayofflying.
Secondly,mostaircraftintheFHCarerestoredtoflyablecondition.Manyairmuseums arestaticinstitutions.Onemightask,Ifyouwantedtoknowaboutafox,wouldyougo andstareatoneontheshelfofataxidermistsshop?Thebestwaytoexperiencethe animalisinitsnaturalhabitat.Inthecaseofavintagefighterplane,itsnaturalhabitatis thesky.
AttheFHC,visitorscannotonlysee,buthear,smell,andfeelthesemagnificent
machinesfromdecadespast.NothingcomparestohearingthegrowloftheSpitfires
Rolls-Royceengine,seeingthe Storchnearlyhoverinthefaceofaheadwind,orwatching theHellcatgothunderingpast,hotonthetailofaZerofighter.
Inordertokeepemflying,theFHChangarscontainworkareas,aswellasdisplay
spaces.Astaffoffivefull-timemechanicskeepstheseplanesintopflyingshape.Inthe summer,themechanicsarepreppingtheplanesforflightand,inthewinter,theyare
tearingthemdownandinspectingeverypart.
Intheopenhangar,mechanicsjackuptheplanestotesttheirlandinggear,delveinto theinnerworkingsoftheirengines,changebrakes,andtroubleshootradios.Periodically, theytakeanaircraftoutsidethehangardoors,tieitdown,andrattlethewindowswitha noisyenginerun.
TheplanesflylocallyandperformregularlyatPaineField,aswellasvisitairshowsin
westernWashington.FromMaytoSeptember,theFHCholdsfreeFlyDaysatitshome
base.Commonly,twoormoreaircraftflyforexample,theSpitfireandHurricaneon
BattleofBritainDay,ortheBf109andFw190onLuftwaffeDay.Someweekends,the
luckycrowdistreatedtoaperformancestarringtheonlyflyingexampleofthataircraft leftintheworld.
Onwarmsummerdays,visitorscanwatchthemaintenanceactivitieshappeningrightoutsidetheFHCshangardoors.Toseeoneoftheseiconicairplanesisonething.Tohearitroartolife,smelltheoilyexhaust,andtofeelthepowerfulenginerumbleinyourchest,isquiteanotherexperience!
TheSovietT-34/85mediumtankwasdesignedastheanswertothelargeandpowerfulGermantanksencounteredontheEasternFront.TheFHCsexamplewasbuiltfromanarmoredrecoveryvehiclefoundinCzechoslovakia.
