During this project there have been so many who have helped me immeasurably. I hope I got them all:
To Cathy Cartland, who is my wife, but also my editor. This project could not have been completed without your expertise.
To Dad, for the conversations, insights and suggestions. To my brother Jack and my sister-in-law Jill for giving me a research base in the East. To my sisters Mary, Jeni, and Susan, for reading the manuscript and sharing your memories and encouragement.
To Mr. Bob Hope for taking time out of an incredible schedule to give me input.
Thanks to the Greater Boston Area Chamber of Commerce and the fine people at Brighton High School, especially Principal Juliette Johnson, Registrar John Henry, and Mr. Tom BoyleBrighton H.S. class of 1921.
A big thank you to Bonnie Dwyer, Librarian and Archivist, Donald W. McDade Director of Publications, and Evelyn Foss, my grandfather's special friend at Kent's Hill Preparatory School in Maine.
To his boys from Illinois College in Jacksonville: Ira Clark, John Doyle, Sam Pinson, Mike Zupsich, and Sam Mangieri for the memorable "roundtable" discussion. Thank you to Mr. Bob Merris, Vice President for Development and Alumni Relations at the College for organizing my get-together with these men.
And a special thank you to Mr. Charles Bellatti, former Sports Information Director at the University of Illinois and Jacksonville native, who took part in that discussion and checked my manuscript for accuracy.
To my grandfather's Fighting Illini who shared their insights with me, especially, Alex and Lou Agase, Eddie Bray, Mike Kasap, Pete Palmer, Chuck Boerio, Bill Butkovich, J.C. Caroline, Art Dufelmeier, Dike Eddleman, Sam Rebecca and Roger Wolf. To Mrs. Geraldine Young, Buddy's wife, for the

Thanks to friends like Fritzi and Denny Frary for a wonderful day-long chat. To Julia "Totsie" Drury and Barbara Sandklev for the tour around Staten Island and a look at my grandmother's roots.
