Foreword
The Fighting Illini sports "family" encompasses an impressive list. Among the names, one stands apart. Dike Eddleman, Illinois' greatest all-around athlete, is a friend to many, a stranger to none, and admired by all.
Growing up in the '50s and '60s, Dike Eddleman was one of those sport names consistently discussed with my friends. He represented not only athletic achievement, but was a terrific role model. Working with him through the years, I have discovered his unselfish attitude and his love for people are his greatest attributes. After reading his biography, I think you will agree.
I am proud to include Dike's name at the top of the University of Illinois roster of outstanding athletes. As I look back on the great heritage that shaped the Fighting Illini sports program, Dike looms larger than life, not only for his athletic achievements, but for his loyalty, integrity and dedication.
Dike's purpose at Illinois has been to promote a university that became his second home. Standing on the threshold of a new century, remembering Dike's contributions will encourage future excellence.
Although new sports heroes replace the old, one name has endured. Thanks to his daughter, Diana, the story of Dike and the Eddleman years will remain a rich part of Illinois' colorful history.

Dear friends,
Athletics have made my life a continuous drama filled with hopes, dreams, frustration, excitement, disappointment and comedy. As I reflect on my 70-plus years, I can honestly say I have been a very lucky man who has lived a full and happy life. Through the years, I have been richly blessed with a wonderful family, faithful friends and loyal fans.
Centralia, Illinois, holds a special place in my heart because it was in my hometown that Teddy and I started our exciting life together. The University of Illinois, one of the world's finest educational institutions, is and will remain a unique haven of glorious memories for us as you will discover.
