He was also the leader of the crew. His responsibility was to make sure the crew and spacecraft were safe. Armstrong and Aldrin climbed into the Eagle spacecraft. Their destination : the moon! Collins stayed on Columbia. After hours of running through checklists and about 100 hours into the flight, Eagle separated from Columbia.
