Foreword for Easy Tarot Reading
Josephine Ellershaw, through her book Easy Tarot , has introduced tens of thousands of people in three languages to the joys of Tarot. Her clear writing style coupled with her years of reading experience give the beginning tarot reader the perfect foundation for their tarot practice.
After studying Easy Tarot, Josephines fans and students were quickly reading the cards for themselves. But they were soon ready for the next step and wanted to take their readings to the next level. There is a huge step from understanding what the cards mean to weaving everything together to create a coherent message.
Actually, readers in general, not just Josephines fans, have been clamoring for a book like this for as long as Ive been acquiring Tarotmore than ten years now. Ive asked other authors to take on this challenge. Most refusedfor how do you teach something as layered and complex, such an intricate combination of skills and intuition?
Josephine bravely took on this task; and in fact, she offered to do so, at the request of her many readers and fans. I am awed when I imagine the amount of work she put into this book. You will see and be amazed, too. She covers every reading in clear, brilliant detail. In addition, she had each client follow up for months after the reading. The information gained through this undertaking is priceless. Reading this book is like being in the mind of a master Tarot reader, which, in a way, you are. Only it seems much clearer and more organized than one would expect.
If, after reading this book, your readings do not improve by leaps and bounds, you must not have been paying attention. Although the book is called Easy Tarot Reading, there is something here for all of us, no matter our experience level.
Josephine, thank you for taking on this task, for going where angels and even Fools fear to tread. You deserve multitudes of praise and many thanks, which I know will come your way. But I think I am first: Well done, very well done! And thank you.

Introduction
Take ten people, add a Tarot reading, blend in their uniquely varied worlds, and the resulting stories produced a far more potent alchemy than originally anticipated. The book developed a direction of its own, powered by the actual life events of those who featured in the readings. We followed their journey, sharing their innermost hopes, fears, plans, ambitions, challenges, and success they encountered along the way. My initial trepidation was replaced as I found myself immersed within the suspense of their unfolding stories.
This book was written in direct response to requests from Easy Tarot readers as they made the transition to reading for others. As a teaching tool the most logical route seemed to be to record some actual readings, since it was the most realistic way to demonstrate the cards in action. Taking it a step further, I decided to follow the progress of our subjects, to provide us with a complete picture of the reading, before, during, and after their visit. What I had not bargained for was the nerve-racking yet exhilarating journey that followed. The praise deserving here is to those people who so honestly and generously opened their personal lives to us, for without their participation this book would not have been possible. I know they will fully appreciate my humour, imparted lovingly, when I inform you that at times it felt like herding cats as I attempted to follow their progress!
The Tarot silently beavered away, astounding as always in their mysterious way, the evidence of their wisdom sometimes only fully apparent in the final conclusion of those readings. Meanwhile, my role was like a bridge between the Tarot and the seeker, relaying the messages and keeper of words for your reference. As I set off down this road I began to question myself, I vowed it must have been some terrible misjudgement on my part to undertake what suddenly appeared to be an act of madness. Yet through messages from the Tarot, most particularly
the Hanging Man and Temperance, that view became transformed as I found myself absorbed.
As is usually the case, life has a habit of heading off in a different direction just at the point you think you should be doing something else, and settling down to write seemed to mark precisely such an occasion! The familiar world around me went into explosion mode, with a few spectacular gems thrown into the mix, just for good measure. At the time my own cards held the appearance of a disaster previewand as ever, how accurate they were. Send in the cavalry! Enter loving family and friends, an encouraging and wonderful editor in the form of Barbara Moore, the team of helpful staff at Llewellyn led by an enthusiastic Bill Krause, and gradually the madness of the world slipped beyond the task at hand. Amidst the mayhem, as if by some unknown intervention, readers letters continued to arrive, a timely reminder of the reasoning that led me here in the first place.
