A SPELL IS CAST
Fern's hand was tingling, her brain was racing, and her time was running out. Standing unknowingly before her were three women poised and ready to be guided to their destiny. Unfortunately, no fairy godmother had ever taken on three assignments at the same time. Could she do it? Dare she try? There was no time to send out a signal for a consultation about dealing with so many tangled tales. The door of opportunity could be lost if she didn't act now. Immediately! Fern wrapped her shaky fingers around the crystal wand tucked in the sash at her waist, and raised it above the three women. She closed her eyes and concentrated as she'd never done before. There would be some danger. Pain, too. Some hearts would be broken, but love would prevail if they had enough courage... if they would listen.
Of courseFern smiled with just the slightest touch of chagrina bit of help to get the girls off to a flying start would be only wise.
Besides, she thought as she waved her wand and released a brief, glittering shower of magic over Belinda, Lilith, and Roberta, "happily ever after" was more than just shop talk. Fern Tatiana Goodwin delivered.

The dedication in my first book was to family... so it seems
right to acknowledge some special friends and mentors in
my second one.
Thanks to Kay Bryant and Donna Hendricks, two talented
friends who gave me the help and encouragement to actually
write this story.
Thanks to Joanna Cagan, my editor, for her exquisite skills,
her understanding, and for taking a chance on someone new
and something different.
And finally, thanks to Madeline Baker, a wonderful, giving
author who has become a treasured friend. A few books ago
she mentioned my name in one of her dedications, and I can
hardly believe I have the chance to thank her in this special
way.
Thanks to all of you for helping my dreams come true!

PROLOGUE
Fern Tatiana Goodwin discreetly tugged up the back of her wretched panty hose and peeked around a large ficus studded with hundreds of tiny white lights. The elegant ballroom of the Royal Arms Hotel looked more like a fairy palace than many of the real ones she'd seen over the last millennia or so.
Lacy peach swags ringed the room, and more glittering lights traced a path leading to a white lattice arbor that framed the bride and groom. Woven into the arch above their heads, like a springtime cloud of scent and color, was baby's breath, greenery, and peach roses. The theme was repeated in the floral arrangements nestled in brilliant silver bowls artfully placed around the room on linen-topped tables. Everything was perfect except for one little thing.
Someone was planning to harm the bride.
And Fern was fit to be tied.
Fairy godmothering was not the sure thing it once had been. The success rate had been declining steadily since the late 1800s, and the last fifty years had been terrible. Humans had become so blasted high-tech that they were systematically reasoning all the wonder and magic right out of their lives. Such a large population had seen so many special effects and heard so many outlandish tales that they didn't even consider real magic anymore. Even the most powerful fairy godmothers couldn't work on people who had lost the ability to believe.
In fact, sweet Cindy Ella Jones had been Fern's first assignment in over forty years who had actually sensed the cosmic mystery directing her life. Once she'd been helped to find her "life-tale," she'd followed the path all the way, dips and potholes included (which, of course, were part of the screening process). Finally she was ready to start reaping the rewards.
And nobody was going to mess that up!
Page 10
Fern eyeballed Cindy Ella and her handsome groom and tried to align herself with the vibrations in the room. Ten minutes ago when she'd entered the reception, her hidden wand had thrummed a time or two, which should have alerted her immediately. However, the flush of long-awaited success must have momentarily fogged her receptors. Stars! There was so much interference. She closed her eyes and slowly began blocking all thoughts except the ones dealing with Cindy and Prince. Little by little the clamoring in her head quieted and she honed in on one distressed voice she recognized. It was Belinda Brown, Cindy's best friend.
