You know our mission. In days when faith has growncold, and belief in God and immortality is waning to a close, we come todemonstrate to man that he is immortal, by virtue of the possession of the soulwhich is a spark struck off from Deity itself.
We wish to teach him of the errors of the past, toshow him the life that leads to progress, to point him to the future ofdevelopment and growth.Spirit Teachings.
It will lead them to know of Intelligences whosewhole life is one of love and mercy and pity and helpful aid to man, combinedwith adoration of the Supreme.
Spirit Teachings.

STAINTON MOSES - A MEMOIR
WILLIAMSTAINTON MOSES was born in November, 1839. He was educated at the Lincolnshire Grammar School of which his father was headmaster. Later he attended the Bedford Grammar School, where his brilliant abilities and his industry gained him many prizesand an exhibition to Oxford. Here he broke down from overwork on the eve of hisfinal examination, and was ordered abroad.
Hespent nearly a year traveling on the Continent, and passed several months onthe old Greek monastery of Mount Athos, which, he afterwards learned, he hadbeen impressed to do as part of his spiritual training.
Hereturned to England, and, after taking his degree, was ordained to a curacy inthe Isle of Man, where his courage and unselfish devotion during an outbreak ofsmall-pox endeared him to all. After a short time in Dorset, Stainton Mosestook a curacy in Salisbury, which proved to be his last Church appointment, asthroat trouble developed, and obliged him to give up all public speaking for atime.
Hecame to London, where he stayed with Dr. and Mrs. Speer and acted as tutor totheir son. About 1871 he obtained the post of English master at University College School, which he held till ill-health obliged him to relinquish it in1889.
Asa result of reading The Debatable Land, a book lent him by Mrs. Speer, his interest in Spiritualism was aroused, and a circle was formed at which hismediumship quickly developed.
Inearly life Stainton Moses had been fairly well-to-do, having a small estate onthe Lincolndhire coast. By some oversight the maintenance of the sea-wall wasnot kept up, and one unusual tide swept away the best part of his estate.
Once, when staying in the Isle of White, Stainton Moses was invited to visit LordTennyson, who always liked to read Light. They walked over the Downs together, and Stainton Moses wrote a graphic account of his visit. This was unfortunatelylost.
Aboutfour years before his passing which took place in September, 1892, StaintonMoses was thrown from the top of an omnibus and sustained severe injury. Then, after his recovery, he was attacked with influenza. He rallied, but never threwoff its clutches. Overwork sapped his strength, and influenza seized him again.
Thememorial edition of Spirit Teachings contains a biographical notice ofStainton Moses by Mr. Charlton Speer, and a full account of the wonderfulphenomena given through his mediumship during the circles that were held at Dr.Speers house at Alexandra Road, N.W.
StaintonMoses founded the London Spiritualist Alliance, and addressed the inauguralmeeting on behalf of the committee at the Banqueting Hall of St. Jamess Hall,on May 8, 1884. For some years he contributed frequently to Light, ofwhich paper he subsequently became the editor.
Part 1 - TRANCE TEACHINGS
PREFACE TO TRANCE TEACHINGS
Theseteachings are preserved to us in the form of notes made by Mrs. Speer, wife ofthe doctor at whose house the circles were held.
Afterthe passing of Stainton Moses, Mrs. Speer sent her notes to Light. Fromthem selections have been made and are now republished, so that teachings ofgreat value and interest may not be lost.
Theyare not continuous, being merely extracts from a large amount of material;passages not contiguous in the original are sometimes placed in juxtapositionif they complete the sense.
Theteachings are given in Mrs. Speers words, except where inverted commas denotethe actual words of the communicating spirit. Unless otherwise stated,Imperator was the spirit-control.
Inconcluding the series Mrs. Speer says: It is impossible to give any idea ofthe impression produced upon the Circle by the beauty and refinement of themanifestations, or by the power and dignity of Imperators influence.
TRANCE TEACHINGS
Ihave been wishing for some time to give you information concerning AngelsMinistry ; how it is controlled ; the way in which information is conveyed toyou. Write! I find it very difficult to speak slowly. If you forget, I willimpress the medium afterwards.
I,myself, Imperator Servus Dei, am the chief of a band of forty-nine spirits, thepresiding and controlling spirit, under whose guidance and direction the otherswork.
Iam come from the seventh sphere to work out the will of the Almighty ; and, when my work is complete, I shall return to those spheres of bliss from whichnone return again to earth. But this will not be till the mediums work onearth is finished, and his mission on earth exchanged for a wider one in thespheres.
Underme is my deputy and lieutenant, Rector, whose business it is to superintend inmy absence, and especially to control the band of physical manifesting spirits.
Associatedwith him is a third high spirit, who is the inspiring spirit, Doctor, theTeacher. He guides the mediums thoughts, influences his words, directs hispen. Under his general superintendence there are the spirits of wisdom andknowledge, to be hereafter described.
Nextcome the guardians whose are it is to ward off and modify the banefulinfluences of earth, to drive away the hurtful, temper the painful, to shedaround an influence. The inward yielding to evil can alone destroy their power.Yet again, there are two guardians whose care it is to ward off the evilinfluences of the spheres, the allurement of the lower spirits who would drawthe medium from his allotted work and divert him from his sacred mission. Thesefour guardians are my personal attendants, and these complete the first circleof seven, the whole band being divided into seven circles of seven spirits;each circle composed of one presiding spirit with six ministers.
Thefirst circle is composed entirely of guardians and inspiring spiritsspiritswhose mission is general and concerned with the supervision of the whole band.
Thenext circle of seven spirits is devoted to the care of lovespirits of love.Religion, love to God; charity, love to man; gentleness, tenderness, pity, mercy, friendship, affection; all these are in their charge.
Theyminister to the affections, inspire feelings of gentleness and mercy; love toGod, the Universal Father; love to man, the common brother; tenderness for allwho grieve; pity for all who suffer; desire to benefit and help all.
Nextcomes a circleone presiding, with six spirit ministersof wisdom. Under theircare is intuition, perception, reflection, impression, reasoning and the like. They preside over the intuitive faculties and the deductions made fromobservable facts. They inspire the medium with the spirit of wisdom and driveaway influences fallacious and misguiding. They plant intuitive wisdom.
