SHELTER FROM THE STORM
Spence hesitated, then put his arms around her, holding her close and soaking her gown, he was sure, with the water that dripped from his hair and seeped through his shirt.
The sky lit up and another crack of thunder shook the ground beneath the wagon. He felt the tremor that ran through her as she buried her head under his chin.
"I'm all right. Really," she said. "You're here, and that's all that matters." She raised her head, and even though it was dark as pitch he knew she stared at him. Then he felt her tender lips brush his, tentatively at first, then with more concentration.
"I don't think you know what you're doing," he warned.
"Maybe I do."
She brushed his lips again, pressing her body into his.
"I'd better leave," he said, mostly to give her the chance to change her mind. He would go if she wanted him to; if not....

Chapter One
New York City, 1879
Spence McCord took in the sight of the tree-lined street before him where large houses crowded together and each well-kept miniature front lawn sported a carriage block and hitching post. The clopping of his horse's feet could barely be heard over the laughter and shrieks of delight from the children playing tag nearby. Added to these, though filtered by distance, were the sounds of busy New York City assaulting his ears and making him look first to his left, then to his right.
He didn't belong in such confining surroundings where there was barely enough good air to breathe and almost no clear view of the sky. Two weeks ago he'd been standing on Colorado soil with all the fresh mountain air a man could want and clear skies as far as the eye could see. If the choice had been his, he would have been the one trailing herd up to Montana instead of riding a train east to the biggest city he'd ever seen.

At last he brought his horse to a halt in front of a stately two-story house with a wide front porch. Beside the bottom step was a plain sign announcing: O'ROURKE PHOTOGRAPHY. This was where she lived. Miss Katie O'Rourke. With a resigned sigh, he dismounted from the rented horse, tied the reins to the metal ring on the hitching post, which resembled the scowling features of a bird, then followed the brick walk to the steps. Before going further, he pulled a piece of paper from his pocket and read it again.

Dear Katie,

This is Spence McCord. He's come to escort you across the country to Montana unless you've changed your mind about this ridiculous idea. I would have come myself but Rachel is expecting our third child and I can't leave her. Spence is a good and honest man.

Your brother, Tim
The letter was a little too sparse of detail to suit Spence, which meant he'd have to do a lot of explaining and he didn't relish that idea at all, especially if Miss O'Rourke had as much Irish spirit in her as her brother. Actually, none of this suited Spence, but he was under a pressing obligation. He'd had no choice in the matter whatsoever. Tim had made that very clear. A debt owed was a debt that had to be paid. And Spence owed Tim.
He folded the letter and held it in his hand as he climbed the steps. After knocking on the door, he backed up several spaces and waited. Within minutes the door opened to reveal an older woman in an apron holding a towel.
