Joseph Walker (1798-1876) had probably the longest and most distinguished career of any frontiersman in American history. This first biography of this great frontier hero is based on years of research and many previously unpublished and neglected sources. It gives a rousing and authoritative picture of Walker-his pioneering heritage, his many accomplishments, and his exceptional personality.

Acknowledgments
The libraries and manuscript collections of the following institutions were frequently used: the universities of Arizona, California (Bancroft Library) and Missouri; the Jackson County Historical Society (Independence, Missouri), Missouri Historical Society (St. Louis); the State Historical Society of Missouri (Columbia); Sharlot Hall Historical Society (Prescott, Arizona); Arizona Historical Society (Tucson); U.S. Army War College (Carlisle, Pennsylvania); and the Library of Congress. Staff members at these facilities were without exception cooperative and extremely competent.
Contemporary descendants of eighteenth- and nineteenth-century Walkers made family papers and recollections available. Their specific contributions are acknowledged in the notes. Several editorial professionals and long-time friends, Robert Creamer, Suzanne Hubbell, Patricia Ryan and Jeremiah Tax, read portions of the manuscript and gave useful advice and encouragement. The support and insightful suggestions of Tom Stewart, the working editor of this book, were of great importance. Michael Serres prepared the maps which accompany and enhance the text. Kate, Ky, Lee and Lyn Gilbert; Ruth and Bob Fader; Bill Hamilton; Carol Squires; John Thomson; Margaret, Sam and Tracy Walmer have provided special and significant assistance.
My wife, Ann, is a talented, indefatigable historical researcher, patient editor and discerning critic who was creatively involved from the beginning to the end of this book. During the four years involved she was the only person with sufficient specific knowledge of the subject to speculate about and discuss it intelligently. She also has two natural gifts, the importance of which can be fully appreciated only by those who have been involved in similar exercises. She can read microfilm for hours on end without becoming nauseated. (In contrast, ten minutes

or so of this activity set my head spinning and stomach churning.) She can decipher crabbed, faded nineteenth-century handwriting quickly and accurately.
My opinion has been, and is, that Ann's contributions have been so substantive that they can be properly acknowledged only by formally presenting this book as a product of joint authorship. However, she is a person of strong principles and objected to this on the ground that she did not do any of the actual writing. That is true in a de jure sense, but it is also true that without her efforts this book would have been written either much differently from the way it is or not at all. De facto, Westering Man is a cooperative creation, a product of shared thought, work and pleasure.
