Chappaquiddick Speaks: summary, description and annotation

The Chappaquiddick incident of 1969 has been called the most discussed traffic accident in history and the most brilliant cover-up ever achieved in a nation where investigative procedures are well-developed and where the principles of equal justice prevail. It is considered one of the great, unsolved mysteries of 20th century America. There appear to be enthusiastic attempts to resurrect Edward Kennedys image. A new Kennedy museum at the Kennedy Compound in Hyannis Port has a special room dedicated to Ted, our Democratic Party lauds his legacy, and a new political thriller movie is in the works showing what Ted Kennedy had to go through in 1969. The theory these days, accepted by most, is that Kennedy was innocent of any serious wrong-doing. Either he was suffering from shock and should not be accountable for his actions, or Mary Jo drove off the bridge alone, or there was a real companion that Kennedy, Gargan, and Markham were attempting to protect all these years through some sense of old-fashioned chivalry, to the detriment of their reputations and careers. The public indignation to the Chappaquiddick scandal, so passionate in 1969 and for a quarter century longer, seems to have all but disappeared. Many friends implored Pinney not to write this book because of what it might do to the memory of a Great Man. Whats the point? they asked. Think of all the good things he did. It was just an unfortunate mistake. No one cares about Chappaquiddick now. There wont be any interest. Youre a Democrat, for Gods sake! Before Bill put pen to paper, he assured family and friends that if the science did not back up the new witnesss sighting, and what that sighting implied, he would abandon the effort. Bill had no wish to malign anyones reputation if the evidence did not back up the accusation. However, the forensic science and medical evidence back up the theory most strongly. The Chappaquiddick incident is history, and these days attempts to ignore the historical record, or rewrite it, rarely succeed for long. Pinney was led, by the evidence, to accept that the underlying theory as set out in this book is true. As such, the truth has merit and should be told.

CONTENTS
From the Author
This is the third edition of Chappaquiddick Speaks. The second edition corrected several typographical errors, answered some common questions from readers, and included the results of further experiments on the Delmont 88, Kennedys Oldsmobile that drove off Dike Bridge.
But it turns out many readers were frustrated by information overload. Too much information to absorb and synthesize in one book. The first two editions were intended to coax the reader to the final conclusion a sort of Sherlock Holmes approach. Ask the reader to figure it out and what it all implied on their own. I was told by many readers that they wanted a simpler approach to the story. Something they could digest easily.
So in this third edition several of the chapters are rearranged. Part Three, where I presented the forensic evidence in previous editions, will introduce the three Smoking Guns that underline our theory. Several chapters from previous editions will be eliminated entirely, and several new ones added. The more technical chapters will be presented at the end of the book for those interested in pursuing the evidence further.
This book differs from most in that it relies on scientific research and forensic evidence to back up its arguments. The conclusion will be difficult to accept for those who hold the Kennedys, and senators in general, in high esteem. But our underlying theory rests on a bedrock of solid science that, you will find, will be very difficult, if not impossible, to dispute.
I am confident this edition will accomplish its mission: provide convincing evidence that the mystery surrounding the Chappaquiddick incident has now been solved beyond reasonable doubt. Or at least the mystery of what occurred. But there will remain mysteries: specifically, how those responsible for investigating the crime were able to cover it up, and how they have been able to cover it up for as long as they have. That could be a separate book all on its own.
This book took five years to complete. Much of the information is new. So enjoy.
