FOREWORD
War and peace touch our lives in one way or another. Our governments may tax us to help pay for military training, guns, tanks, fighter planes, or missiles. We may be asked to serve in the armed forces of our country, whose leaders teach people how to kill others.
Is there not a better way to resolve conflict? How can we end anger, hatred, and injustice; work for justice and righteousness, and security for all nations; thereby establishing peace? The author shows first how God worked in Old Testament times. She explains the concept of holy war as God's way of helping the people of faith. The key to victory was faith in God, not military might. God did the fighting. Faith and obedience were required so God could bring about the victory.
But God as warrior is only one of the images the Bible uses to describe God. Others include wind, fire, light, shepherd, potter, mother eagle, and hostess. "The Old Testament tells us that we do not need to try to have a strong army," the author states. "We can trust in the power of God, not in human violence" to overcome conflict.
Page 10
The writer challenges the notion that the Old Testament supports warfare. She shows how God called the people of Israel away from the futility of human violence, to trust in the power of God to overcome evil. She also shows how the New Testament builds on this principle of trusting God to overcome our enemies.
The Way God Fights is volume one in the Peace and Justice Series listed inside the back cover. It was commissioned by Mennonite Board of Missions, Mennonite Publishing House, and the peace sections of the Board of Congregational Ministries and Mennonite Central Committeeall Mennonite agencies. The goal is to bridge the gap between scholarly Mennonite writings and the narrowly focused evangelical literature that talks peace while supporting warfare. Persons wanting to pursue the theme further may check the references listed "For More Serious Study" near the end of the book.
