In its first 50 years, the City of Toronto changed from a rough settlement to a booming city with a voracious appetite for land. Over the course of two generations, its population increased tenfold partly through immigration, but also through the annexation of older communities. Among these were the former suburbs of Leslieville and Riverdale, as well as the Playter Estates neighborhood, all of which were joined together in 1884 to become the new Toronto community of Riverdale.
Riverdaletells the history of the neighborhood, starting with the Simcoe, Playter, and Leslie families, who shaped the area throughout its early settlement, the American Revolution, and the War of 1812. It shows the waves of immigration from Britain, America, Italy, Greece, and China, that made Riverdale one of Torontos most diverse areas. And it tells the stories written into the map of the neighborhood, revealing the history on display in its streets and historic buildings.

Acknowledgements

Many people have made Riverdale: East of the Don possible. Librarians and archivists in various institutions have often gone the extra mile, among them the The Anglican Church Archives, City of Toronto Archives, Mississauga Library System, Ontario Archives, Royal Ontario Museum, Todmorden Archives, Toronto Public Library, The United Church of Canada Archives, as well as City of Toronto staff and the office of the Surveyor General.

Deirdre Muir Allaert used her considerable skills to design the genealogies; James Gillan Muir kept digging me out of the quicksand of modern technology. Lothar Goecke brought his keen photographic eye to Riverdale streets. Dora and George Rust-DEye generously shared their time, and their expertise. Jane Gibson and Barry Penhale supported me through the whole process, offering excellent advice.

A number of people answered queries and shared information, and at the risk of omitting some very helpful men and women, I would like to thank Fred Graham, Peter Richardson, and William Wright for their ecclesiastical knowledge; Derek Bowles for his knowledge of railways; Andrew Pruss of E.R.A. for patiently explaining Riverdale architecture; Arlene Chan, Frances Code, JoAnne Doucette, Terry Gregg, Brian Hall, Rev. Edward Jackman, The Hon. Hal Jackman, Barbara Myrvold, Guylaine Petrin, Dennis Raphael, Julia Roberts, and many others for their knowledge; residents of Sotterley, England Richard Lloyd (now deceased), the Rev. Canon Paul Nelson, and Martin Stuchfield for help with the Playters; and Anne Davison for her wisdom.

I am grateful to the impressive team at Dundurn who worked for months in so many ways to bring this project to fruition especially my editors Dominic Farrell and Laura Harris.

And a great big thank you to the celebrated author and Riverdale resident Elizabeth Abbott, who took time out of her own busy schedule to write the foreword for this book.
