THE HARNACK/SCHULZE-BOYSEN GROUP
Arvid Harnack. Senior official at the German Ministry of Economics who gave Nazi secrets to the Americans and the Russians.
Mildred Fish-Harnack. American-born academic who helped her husband, Arvid, create a major antifascist underground in Berlin.
Harro Schulze-Boysen. A Luftwaffe intelligence officer who was supported by Hermann Gring but was secretly spying on Nazi plans to invade the Soviet Union.
Libertas Schulze-Boysen. Used her society and film-industry connections to build up a file on Nazi atrocities on the Eastern Front.
Greta Lorke. A distinguished academic and friend of Mildred Fish-Harnack. Recruited writers, filmmakers, and poets to create poster campaigns against the regime.
Adam Kuckhoff. Gretas husband and a longtime political activist against the Nazis.
John Sieg. Michigan-born former journalist who worked on the German railways and helped unite working-class and academic resisters in Berlin.
THE BAUM GROUP
Herbert Baum. An electrician by trade, he was an inspiring leader who planned acts of sabotage against the regime.
Marianne Cohn. Led the Baum group with her husband, Herbert, creating anti-Nazi propaganda that she spread across Germany.
Heinz Birnbaum. A devoted follower of Baums, he used his work as a factory foreman to plan sabotage.
Sala Kochmann (ne Rosenbaum). Funny and spirited, joined Cohn as one of the key female leaders of the Baum group.
Martin Kochmann. Baums childhood friend who was forced to go on the run in Nazi Germany.
Suzanne Wesse. Catholic member of the Baum group who spoke a number of languages and recruited resisters among forced laborers.
Charlotte Paech. Nurse whose worked to help fellow Jews and members of the Baum group put her on a Gestapo wanted list.
THE GERMAN MILITARY
Hans Oster. A senior figure in the Abwehr, Germanys military counterintelligence department, whose hatred of the Nazis made him one of the regimes most consistent opponents.
Hans von Dohnanyi. A lawyer and Abwehr officer who created a file of Hitlers crimes and worked with Oster to rescue Jews.
Admiral Wilhelm Canaris. The Abwehr spy chief who played a dangerous game, appearing loyal to Hitler while allowing Oster to create an anti-Nazi clique inside the organization.
Pastor Dietrich Bonhoeffer. A leading German theologian, and Dohnanyis brother-in-law, he was brought into the Abwehr as it sought to make peace with the Allies.
General Ludwig Beck. A former chief of staff of the German armed forces who would become a key member of the resistance.
Major Friedrich Heinz. An uncompromising officer who, having fallen out with the Nazis, agreed to Osters suggestion that he assassinate Hitler.
Josef Mller. A broad-shouldered, cunning lawyer who became an Abwehr agent, relaying peace messages to the British via the Vatican.
Colonel Henning von Tresckow. Decorated for bravery during World War I, Tresckow loathed the Nazis and was a driving force behind wartime efforts to kill Hitler.
Colonel Claus von Stauffenberg. War hero and devoted Christian who volunteered to kill Hitler.
THE STUDENTS
Hans Scholl. A medical student who served on the Russian Front. Turned against Nazism to form the White Rose resistance group in Munich.
Sophie Scholl. Inspired by her fathers liberal ideas, Sophie supported her brother Hanss resistance and became a key figure in the White Rose.
Alexander Schmorell. Student and soldier who refused to swear the armys oath of allegiance to Hitler and joined with the Scholls resistance.
Christoph Probst. Young father who hated Nazi crimes against Jews and the sick. Joined the White Rose.
Willi Graf. Devoted Catholic who was recruited to the White Rose by Probst. Had witnessed atrocities in Poland and the Soviet Union.
Traute Lafrenz. Encouraged her boyfriend, Hans Scholl, to organize resistance in Munich and then inspired a northern White Rose in her native Hamburg.
THE LONERS
Fritz Kolbe. Unassuming diplomat who would become one of the United States most efficient spies in the Third Reich.
