Bolton and the Spanish Borderlands: summary, description and annotation

In the early years of the twentieth century, Herbert Eugene Bolton opened up a new area of study in American history: the Spanish Borderlands. His research took him to the archives of Mexico, where he found a wealth of unpublished, even unknown, material that shed new light on the early history of North America, particularly the American Southwest. The seventeen essays in this book, edited by John Francis Bannon, illustrate the importance of his contributions to American historiography and provide a solid foundation for students of Borderlands history.

PREFACE
This book has several purposes. The first is to keep American historians mindful that Herbert Eugene Bolton, no matter what his other contributions to American history writing, was first and foremost the scholar who opened up the Spanish Borderlands, integrating them into the broader understanding of American history. Another is to bring into print several pieces pertinent to the Borderlands which have to date remained in manuscript. Still another is to pick up several "stray" Borderland pieces which have very real interest and value and which are not readily available. The selections are indicative of Bolton's interests in the Borderlands story and also can serve as signposts pointing to his more extensive studies. It is not a summary of either his interests or his studies. Perhaps this little volume may be of service as a Borderlands reader for students of the area and also as a historiographical aid relative to the writing of American history.
A sincere acknowledgment is due the Bancroft Library, its director, Professor George P. Hammond, and the staff for permission to print some of the bits from its collection of Bolton Papers and for the generous co-operation tendered in the assembling of materials for the introduction. Professors Kinnaird, Lawrence and Lucia, have given strong encouragement to this effort and added many bits to the documentary data and my own recollections of Professor Bolton. And special thanks should go to Miss Rita Adams for much help in preparing the manuscript and, most of all, for aiding with the proofreading and indexing chores.
