No Time for Fear summons the voices of more than 100 women who served as nurses overseas during World War II, letting them tell their story as no one else can. Fessler has meticulously compiled and transcribed more than 200 interviews with American military nurses of the Army, Army Air Force, and Navy who were present in all theaters of WWII. Their stories bring to life horrific tales of illness and hardship, blinding blizzards, and near starvation---all faced with courage, tenacity, and even good humor. This unique oral-history collection makes available to readers an important counterpoint to the seemingly endless discussions of strategy, planning, and troop movement that often characterize discussions of the Second World War.

Foreword
This is an amazing story, and one that has been waiting to be told for nearly fifty years. Those of us who experienced the horrors of World War II on a first-hand basis, to a person, quickly developed a very deep appreciation for the dedication, compassion, and professionalism of our comrades who were serving in the military nurse corps. When we were wounded, they were ever present, taking care of our needs, listening to our inner thoughts and prayers and, if necessary, chiding us to regain independence. When we were under fire, they were often right there with us, often suffering the same wounds and "fears of the unknown" that we did.
And yet, as I reflect upon how much World War II has affected our nation and been described in the popular media, on our television and movie screens, and through a seemingly infinite number of publications, I realize that very few historians or producers have ever taken the time to listen to the nurses' storyto the thoughts and reflections of those women and their medical colleagues who gave so much of themselves to our nation and its warriors in their time of greatest need, while asking so little for themselves.
