This book is a collection of essays arising out of the Zealandias Great War conference organised by the New Zealand Military History Committee in November 2003. In 32 essays by distinguished military historians from New Zealand and around the world, various aspects of New Zealands involvement in World War One are discussed. Subjects include the Pioneer Maori Battalion, women who opposed the war, the early years of the RSA, Gallipoli, the infantry on the Somme, New Zealands involvement in the naval war, prostitution and the New Zealand soldier, the Home Defence, religion in the First World War, and the Armistice. New Zealands Great War is a fascinating miscellany of informed comment on and insight into the event that did most to shape New Zealand as a nation. Contributors include New Zealands own Chris Pugsley, Glyn Harper, Terry Kinloch, Monty Soutar, Megan Hutching, Vincent Orange and Bronwyn Dalley, as well as Peter Dennis, Jeffrey Grey, Jennifer Keene, Jenny McLeod...

This book is based on the proceedings of the Zealandias Great War conference - photo 1

This book is based on the proceedings of the Zealandias Great War conference organised by the New Zealand Military History Committee in November 2003. This event could not have taken place without a wide variety of support.

We are indebted to the following institutions for providing assistance in bringing speakers to Wellington for the conference: the New Zealand Defence Force, the Ministry of Defence, the New ZealandFrance Friendship Fund, the Australian High Commission, the Embassy of the United States of America, the Ministry for Arts and Culture and the New Zealand Lottery Grants Board. Thanks too to Margaret Calder, Chief Librarian of the Alexander Turnbull Library, and the National Library for their help in providing a venue for the conference. The New Zealand Film Archive also made a valuable contribution to the proceedings.

We acknowledge also the efforts and support of our fellow members of the New Zealand Military History Committee, Dr Stephen Clarke and Peter Cooke, who prepared the index, and all those who participated in the conference over the three days. The New Zealand Defence Force kindly provided assistance in the publication of the proceedings. Finally, we much appreciate the efforts of Ian Watt and his team at Exisle in publishing this book.
