Preface
Jay Luvaas and Len Fullenkamp unknowingly forced me to write this book. Jay recently retired as the professor of military history at the U.S. Army War College at Carlisle Barracks, Pennsylvania, and Len is the director of military history there. They shared an office and, among other things, ran a program of staff rides for military groups to local (and not so local) Civil War battlefields. When I joined the faculty of the war college, I also became a member of the History Guildan informal band Len uses to track historians and people with an interest in military history. Len and I taught military history together at West Point, and I was filling one of the surprisingly few historian positions at the college, so joining the guild was automatic. I quickly discovered that one of the major duties of guild membership is leading staff rides. Jay, the father of the modern staff ride, took me and other volunteers to stomp around Gettysburg (the closest battlefield to Carlisle and the most frequent staff-ride location) and later Antietam. He patiently and expertly walked us through the battles and the administrative intricacies of one-way roads, places to eat lunch, and public latrine locations. Eventually, he declared me fit to lead staff rides. Chris Hockensmith (Jay and Len's secretary) started calling immediately to see if I was available on such-and-such a day to take such-and-such a group to Gettysburg.
