Introduction
In the twenty-one years since The C.S.S. Florida: Her Building and Operations was first published, numerous other books and articles have been written concerning the Confederate Navy, several of which deal with the cruisers and their officers. Most of these, however, are about C.S.S. Alabama. C.S.S. Florida: Her Building and Operations remains the only scholarly work specifically written about this ship. Even when one considers the newer studies, most historians appear reluctant to recognize the value of cruiser warfare. Many students of naval history still insist that the Civil War was the last major conflict in which surface cruisers were used effectively. This view is based on the assumption that the invention of the radio rendered the surface raider entirely too vulnerable; its victims could broadcast their location, bringing about a swift pursuit and destruction of the raider. Also, perhaps, the emergence of the submarine ultimately overshadowed the surface raider, though this interpretation probably discounts too much the role of the surface ships.
Many years ago when this author was still in high school, he read an account of Count Felix Von Luckner's World War I raids on allied commerce with Seeadler, a converted clipper ship that bore an uncanny resemblance to Florida. Von Luckner's exploits left a deep impression on the mind of the young reader and created a life-long interest in commerce raiders, an interest that eventually led to the writing of this book.
