An innovative approach to the history of the First Persian Empire, offering an accessible historical narrative for students and general readers alike

A History of the Achaemenid Empire considers archaeological and written sources to provide an expansive, source-based introduction to the diverse and culturally rich world of ancient Achaemenid Persia. Assuming no prior background, this accessible textbook follows the dynastic line from the establishment and expansion of the empire under the early Achaemenid kings to its collapse in 330 BCE. The text integrates the latest research, key primary sources, and archaeological data to offer readers deep insights into the empire, its kings, and its people.

Chronologically organized chapters contain written, archaeological, and visual sources that highlight key learning points, stimulate discussion, and encourage readers to evaluate specific pieces of evidence. Throughout the text, author Maria Brosius emphasizes the necessity to critically assess Greek sourceshighlighting how their narrative of Achaemenid political historyoften depicted stereotypical images of the Persians rather than historical reality. Topics include the establishment of empire under Cyrus the Great, Greek-Persian relations, the creation of a Persian ruling class, the bureaucracy and operation of the empire, Persian diplomacy and foreign policy, and the reign of Darius III. This innovative textbook:

  • Offers a unique approach to Achaemenid history, considering both archaeological and literary sources
  • Places primary Persian and Near Eastern sources in their cultural, political, and historical context
Examines material rarely covered in non-specialist texts, such as royal inscriptions, Aramaic documents, and recent archaeological finds
  • Features a comprehensive introduction to Achaemenid geography, Greek historiography, and modern scholarship on the Persian War

Part of the acclaimed Blackwell History of the Ancient Worldseries, A History of the Achaemenid Empire is a perfect primary textbook for courses in Ancient History, Near Eastern Studies, and Classical Civilizations, as well as an invaluable resource for general readers with interest in the history of empires, particularly the first Persian empire or Iranian civilization.

Elamite relief with inscriptions of Hanni at Shekafte Salman II. The relief dates to the twelfth century bce and shows a ruler of the Middle Elamite period with his queen and their heir. In the NeoElamite period, the ruler Hanni reused this relief and carved his name and that of his wife and daughters alongside the older images. Seal of Cyrus of Anshan (PFS 93*). The seal image depicts a warrior on horseback pursuing a fleeing enemy already injured by a long spear. Two slain men are lying on the ground. The Elamite inscription reads (I am) Cyrus son of Teispes. Composite line drawing of impressions from the seal of Cyrus of Anshan. Source: Courtesy of M.B. Garrison, M.C. Root and the Persepolis Seal Project.
Plan of Godin Tepe. The Median site is dated to the seventh/sixth century and shows a central columned hall with a square ground plan. It is considered an architectural predecessor to the columned halls of Persepolis and Susa. A similar structure is found at the Median site of Nushe Jan. To this we may now add the construction featuring a columned hall in the United Arab Emirates at Muweilah, Sharjah, dated to the eighth century. Source: After Young and Levine 1974, fig . 87.
Winged genius from Pasargadae. The single relief figure is placed at the Entrance Gate at the Pasargadae complex (Gate R). The figure wears a long Elamite dress and a headdress known from Phoenicia, though it originates in Egypt. The figure is doublewinged, reminiscent of the doublewinged genii of NeoAssyrian palaces. Source: Author photograph.
Plan of Pasargadae. The palatial site at Pasargadae features the palace of Cyrus (Palace P), looking out onto a rectangular spaced garden watered by means of water channels, still visible today. Two pavilions (Pavilion A and B) complete the immediate palace site. To the south, a second palace was built (Palace S). The site was accessed via the Entrance Gate (Gate R), and then by crossing a bridge. North of Cyruss palace is a towerlike structure, the Zendane Suleiman, whose function is not yet fully understood. The tomb of Cyrus II is a single chamber space with a gabled roof placed on a sixstepped platform. The whole structure is perfectly proportioned, with the steps measuring 5.5 m, and the gabled tomb chamber measuring slightly less, achieving an overall height of almost 11 m. Plan of the palace at Dashte Gohar. The ground plan shows a striking similarity to Palace S at Pasargadae and therefore has been dated to the reign of Cambyses II. Source: After Kleiss 1980, Abb. 3.
