ACKNOWLEDGMENTS
THIS WORK IS THE FRUIT OF TEN YEARS of research into trans Atlantic exploration spanning over 1400 years, from Roman times to the fifteenth century. Like all such undertakings, it has been aided by the insight and knowledge of many willing helpers on two continents. We gratefully acknowledge the generosity of spirit that led so many people to contribute to our understanding.
In Italy: the Morosini Naval Academy of Venice, the Municipality of Venice, and our good friends Nicolo and Eleanor Zeno of Venice.
In France: Guy Jourdan of Bargemon, Provence; and Dr. Biorn Ivemark of Belvezes-du-Razes.

Paul of Halifax, who gave so generously of their time, understanding, and hospitality; and Mr. and Mrs. Kerry Prosper.
Last, and undoubtedly first among equals, three remarkable people whose lives have been a constant inspiration: Dame Rita Joe, poet laureate of the Mi'qmaq people; Laura Zolo, the courageous and beautiful yachtswoman of Elba who recreated the Zeno/St. Clair voyage from Venice to Nova Scotia; and Niven Sinclair of London, without whose unstinting help, insight, and encouragement, this work would never have been written.
